Forza Horizon 4 Review

4
  • XONE
  • PC

Forza Horizon 4's connected world and seasonal weather help make what's otherwise a very familiar-feeling experience feel fresh one more time.

Editor's note: This review was originally conducted in a podcast format, available as a video above or right here as an audio file. A summary of the review follows.

The showcase events are more spectacle than anything else.
The showcase events are more spectacle than anything else.

Much of Forza Horizon 4 sticks to the sort of open-world races and activities that have shown up in the previous Horizon games, but framing those events into a world that contains active human players instead of just AI representations of real people makes the whole game feel more alive. The is further enhanced by the game's weather effects, which means the whole world changes from one season to the next every week. Winter racing means you'll deal with snow and might be able to drive across a frozen lake. Spring and Autumn get you some rain, and so on. An hourly "#Forzathon Live" event tops things off by giving the players on your server a reason to get together and complete co-op goals on a regular basis. This, then, gives you an opportunity to meet some other drivers, race against them, and so on. It's a smart collection of changes to an otherwise familiar game.

While Horizon was always meant to feel "lighter' than the self-serious car showroom vibes of Forza Motorsport, Horizon 4 strikes a better tone than its predecessors by making things a little sillier around the edges. Your driver is better represented in cutscenes and is more customizable, leading to a situation where I can make my blonde lady visit the game's beauty spots and floss on some monuments with the game's dopey-but-endearing emotes. An array of dumb unlockable car horns that include the Windows XP shutdown jingle and a batch of quick chat phrases (I tend to enjoy spamming "Racing is fun" over and over again, though the Sega Rally-referencing "GAME OVER YEEEEAAAAHHH" is also pretty good) help keep things squarely in the "let's have fun hooning around this open world" camp. Horizon has always been very earnest about the idea of cars being a whole lot of fun to drive, but the additional, less serious stuff that goes beyond the old "YOU NEED TO LEVEL UP AND WIN HERE AT THE FESTIVAL" progression really helps balance everything out.

Seen here: mud.
Seen here: mud.

The catch is that the game doesn't always make it as easy as I'd like to upgrade or change cars on the fly, leading to me finding a Subaru that handles both on- and off-road events well enough that I drove it almost exclusively. Also, the suite of events can get a little repetitive, even if the races are spread around the open world pretty well and broken out into different disciplines. Some of this is mitigated by a handful of Horizon story chapters that put you in the role of a movie stunt driver or have you tag along with a popular streamer who is counting down her 10 favorite driving games of all time. But it still has the lame showcase events, which should be amazing because the idea of running a road race against a huge hovercraft is a spectacle worth seeing. In practice, though, it's a rubber-banded race against a non-car that is built for sweeping, slow-motion shots of your car jumping over the hovercraft or train or whatever. Though the showcase events are still totally dull from a gameplay perspective, there's a Halo-themed one here that's some silly fun. Also, there seem to only be five of these events and they're front loaded into the game's progression in a way that feels like you can just get them out of the way early and move on.

It's a great-looking game across the board, though players with appropriately built PCs will have the best experience. At 1440p with a GTX 1080 on a G-Sync monitor with the game's settings preset to Ultra, the game usually hovered around the 90fps mark, occasionally popping up to 110 or down to around 70. On the Xbox One X, you can opt for a 4K or supersampled mode that runs at 30fps or a 1080p mode that runs at a solid 60fps. Though everyone's going to have their own feelings about frame rate over image quality, I found the significant motion blur in the 4K/30 mode to be pretty unacceptable by comparison. It's a driving game. Frame rate and sense of speed matters here. Though you can certainly notice the lower resolution in that 1080p/60fps mode, I'd take that 100 percent of the time over the 4K option. It's nice to have the option, either way.

Forza Horizon 4 isn't going to be a huge surprise to anyone who played a previous entry, but in a world where the other big open-world games have ranged from mildly to extremely disappointing, it's great to have another solid entry in the genre to tear through.

Really starting to seem like the X1 will never have a 5-star game on this website. Crackdown 3 seems incredibly unlikely.

This and FH3 probably deserved it more than any others and didn't happen.

Maybe if Halo Infinite exceeds expectations.

But hey, cool to see a not-really-a-video-review video review attached. I do miss the video reviews but I know they are a lot of work for what is probably a minimal return on investment. This seems like a happy middle ground.

I should just spend the hundred US bucks on the ultimate edition since i really loved playing all of the demo on PC....

Anyway, thanks for addressing some of the criticisms and complaints from the previous review on the site. The written review is concise and not minuscule. It's nice to have some clips from the game in the video podcast discussion.

Still like the written reviews even though this review definitely seems like they are evolving in the way they are writing reviews from the past. I don't need 4 page reviews, but a good 3-4 paragraphs is nice.

Just talking about stuff on podcasts, in the live-shows is hard to catalog and go back to weeks or months later. I wish podcasts and videos were more "chunk-able" where you could clip out the main parts, automatically where the talk of the game is.

Thanks Jeff, reviews evolving, but definitely for the better!

Haven't listened to/watched the podcast/video yet, but I think that the written review is moving in the right direction. Two or three paragraphs longer with a bit more time in the oven (writing feels sloppier than Jeff's previous works) and I'll be satisfied, I think.

Can't buy can't buy can't buy. Or fuck I'll just give in and gamepass it. Trying to save money and cut down on games but it's cheap (I rationalize to myself...)

Sounds like Brad may be showing more interest this time; would be cool if he got into it and to hear more of his perspective.

Glad you guys added video footage to your review discussion. It makes the feature complete. Sadly, I've been playing FH3. Been enjoying FH3, and not ready for FH4 yet. That hotwheels DLC is fire.

I'm looking for people to coop PvP with whatever on pc everyone drives away when you challenge them to race lol

Is there a gb community For this?

The only way they could make this game better is make the expansion a police chase one or something like need for speed underground. This actually may take burn out takedowns place for me as best racing game.

I've been playing it since last night and it's probably my favorite driving/racing game I've played so far. Buttery smooth 4k 60 fps on my PC and the game is absolutely gorgeous. As soon as you get in the world it's obvious that the game was developed around the Xbox One X with much higher resolution textures than Horizon 3 had. It's the only game that I've felt justified spending $100 on. There's a lot of content here to keep you busy for a long time and I'm looking forward to the expansions.

I would like to complain about the barn finds because I've never found them enjoyable in any of these games but they're completely optional unless you just feel like you have to have those old cars. I kinda agree with Jeff on the showcase events but they only take like a minute to complete and look cool so I don't really mind them that much.

Game Pass makes this a much easier decision (after the car crash of FH3's PC release & feeling FM7 still doesn't really live up to the FM4 era of the series going all out, this would be a hard sell for $100).

I'm not entirely cool with day 1 DLC (Bond), that price tag for launch-day access, and some of the other stuff around "things we're not giving to people who didn't have $100" like VIP status (which comes with a 5 million credit free property and a wheel spin credit coin-doubler this year? Seems like lacking VIP means you've got to grind a lot more for credits if you want to buy a lot of the cars and play around with the upgrades for them). But at least the demo indicates that getting 4K60 on PC is possible this time so assuming the demo is reflective of the technical state of the full game, that looks like a positive step (especially if making use of Game Pass pricing).

Looking forward to bumping into people in the Giant Bomb Club (seems like playing co-op/online campaign gives a huge boost to rewards and also will be rather more interesting driving vs playing against drivatars - the Horizon games have never really been about winning every event for me so online is a good match).

Edit: Also this review format is extremely good. Top stuff.

I don't really understand the criticism that it is is not easy enough to change car. They have changed it in 4 so that you can literally change car at any time in like 3 or 4 button presses. In previous games you had to go back to a festival site.

I tend to get bored of driving games pretty quickly so it's not likely I'd buy this normally, but it's hard to turn down $10. A month's worth is probably about right.

@crazybagman: I think part of the problem with the last review was that the written portion felt like it was created by an amateur. I will never listen to the audio portions of these reviews, as I just don't have the time to do so, but I will be happy if there is a relatively short, well-written review to accompany the audio/video portion.

Great review, I've been enjoying FH4 quite bit so far, and having been playing a quite a bit of FH3 in the run up, there are definitely some good improvements and enough familiar features to make this the best one yet.

How is it broken for you? I keep getting disconnected and when I retry in the network diagnostics or do it through the menu it usually works but like every 30 mins or so I won't be in a session while driving around but I figure it is just growing pains with the launch servers.

Online does not work at all for me. I tried to connecting from the menu it still does not work. It either starts searching for a session but never connects or gives me an error saying unable to connect. After trying a few hours different remedies I found online I have given up for now.

Gonna get crucified for being a grammar asshole, but...

"The is further enhanced by the game's" - missing a noun there

"...and they're front loaded into..." (front-loaded***)

@kidaamnesiac: To be fair, it's an easy feature to miss, which is probably what happened. I only found it by accident; I don't believe the game ever tries to make you aware of it.

So for everyone's information, you can change cars anywhere on the map by going into the menu, viewing your cars, selecting the one you want, and having it "delivered."

I actually agree with this. The video should have the larger view instead of the people talking, when you guys highlight it. It could be a zoom in/zoom out sort of thing that is very common in may discussion videos, video games or otherwise. I'm sure its something that is easy to do and would make this segment perfect.

I agree with the 4stars from my experience so far, I'm totally fine with the video format, but...

man, the writing was half-assed here, probably the most "whateva let's get this out of the way"-writing I've seen from Jeff. Maybe just do the videocast review and skip the writing if you're not interested in it.

On that note, I love what Waypoint does with very long thoughtful written reviews and the podcast review discussion on top of that, not the other way around. Doesn't even have to be that political.

I was able to read this review in just a few minutes and feel like I got a good idea about the game, and that's a big improvement from the previous one. I'm fine with the short written review with longer video format, but with how many podcasts I try to keep up with, and how not a racing game person that I am, these have tended to be on the too long side for me. I really liked Spiderman but I saw that hour+ runtime and still hesitated about setting aside that time.

I wonder if there is a noticeable different in retaining users who will watch an hour or longer of conversation about a game in a genre they like, as opposed to the amount of users who will watch/listen to any review on this site because a shorter time investment makes the decision a no-brainer.

I listen to Polygon's Quality Control, which is meant as an expansion to the regular review of a game on the site, and they get a lot done in 25-30 minutes.

The Horizon series has some of the worst AI in all racing games unfortunately, ever race is identical, even the pack configuration, and fist place is racing flawlessly and not braking properly.

Also earning rotten spins where you MIGHT win a car or you MIGHT win some small cash prize is a crappy carrot to dangle for leveling up. This has been an issue in Horizon 2-4 it's also there to encourage the gambling and P2W aspect of the microtransactions. But this is all fine and MS gets a free pass.

Overall tiny upgrades in this year's Horizon barely enough to warrant a new game, no doubt all the fun will be locked behind DLC packs like the previous game(hot wheels pack).
