Overview
Revenge is a popular theme in all story-telling media, including video games. Early game stories could easily provide a motivation for the protagonist (and more importantly, the player) in the form of some terrible act perpetrated by his or her enemies, such as the murder of a family member.
However, more story-focused games tend to use the well-worn literary device of revenge as a tragic flaw, showing how characters gradually lose their humanity as a consequence of their obsession (as Kratos does in God of War, for example.) This usually coincides with the concept of an anti-hero.
