So i saw the news on kotaku of the new box art for this game and i thought it looked familiar, lo and behold it's good old Olly Moss who made it. I've really been digging his stuff for a while now but something seemed a little off putting about it. At first i was just gonna be like oh this is really bland, yeah there's the new york skyscrapers and it's all in a skull and eh it's minimalist. But thinking that is just stupid cause, duh, it's Olly Moss and that's what he does best.
I think the thing that turns me off towards this case is all the extra crap that is added to the cover, all the logos and the header at the top. It completely goes against what Olly does and how the picture is done. It just muddies up the front and the design aesthetic he was going for. I think the art would look really nice as a poster, and as many have said it's a nice change to how game covers look. I'd actually like to see more games do stuff like this.
Oh and i've never actually played a Resistance game, i'm just into art :P
Resistance 3
Game » consists of 3 releases. Released Sep 06, 2011
In the third game in Insomniac's Resistance franchise, you will play as Joseph Capelli, murderer of previous protagonist Nathan Hale, as he journeys across the Chimera-controlled United States.
The thing i don't like about the new Resistance 3 box art
I see what you mean. There was a thread not too long ago criticising the same thing about Uncharted 2's GOTY cover, and Killzone 3, with half of it plastered with all of the features and awards ect. It's doesn't cover up too much and there's still a alright piece of boxart to see past it all.
The one thing that I don't like about Resistance 3 is how they've narrowed down their competitive multiplayer to essentially have it resemble yet another CoD clone.
I actually like that cover a lot, and I have no affinity for Resistance whatsoever. I'm so sick of all boxart depicting a generic action scene or a bunch of disembodied heads.
I really like minimalistic posters and cover box arts and this one I think is really good. I agree that the logos all over the box is a distraction and kinda de-emphasises the minimalistic approach... Overall, very good design. I would consider buying this game, even though I haven't played the first two.
I think the cover art itself is AWESOME - but man oh man they have too much Sony branding on there.
- PS3 mark
- PS3 text logo
- PSN mark
- Playstation Network in text
- Playstation Move mark
- Playstation Move Features in text
- "Only on Playstation" branding
- Sony's 3D logo
- Sony Corp. text and diamond mark combo
- and a Blu-ray logo embossed on the case
Craziness. At least they got rid of that huge and horrible Move thing at the top.

The colours also match what you'd likely see on a cheap 50s movie poster, which is the time-frame where the games are set.
The reason this box art is bad is because it tells you (the potential customer) absolutely nothing about the game you're buying. It doesn't even allude to what it's about. There's a weird skull and some clever landmarks disguised as teeth for it. While as an art piece sure, it looks nice, the colour doesn't evoke any type of mood for what Resistance 3 is (a first person horror shooter, apparently), and the colour scheme itself is jarring enough to perhaps get a second look from someone browsing a shelf of PS3 games.
All that extra crap is even worse in Canada because all the awards and review quotes are in both english and french, plus the ESRB stuff it too. I wish we still got 2 separate covers. The base english cover and a wrap around french cover that goes between the case and the shrink wrap.
It looks ok...not the best box art for a game that I have seen, but when it come down to it, why worry about the box art when it is the game that you care about?
