My 2017 list

Haven't done a list in years, but played enough interesting 2017 stuff to warrant one. So here goes!

List items

  • It's a shame we don't get these more often; Japanese games that break the mold from previous established creative norms. So much it is variations on the same concept if something becomes popular. Western developers seem more keen to change up the formula even sligthly every time in order to not get stuck. But when Japanese developers go insane, they generally blow everything else out of the water completely.

NieR: Automata is the work of an auteur and it clearly shows. It's focused and uncompromising in it's vision. Even if N:A didn't shake up the gaming industry with a new type of game design or mechanic that will be copied in the years to come, it showed the industry that we need more weirdos to redefine what games can be.

  • Ok, by now you've probably heard of this game already. The cat is out of the bag, as they say. But we've already played Portal, Candy Box 2, Frog Fractions, Undertale, Pony Island. You can't fool me with this stuff anymore! I already know to expect the unexpectable. Well, DDLC has a warning label at the intro screen, so the developer is not exactly trying to hide that this dating game is a wolf in sheep's clothing. So what's the deal?

Even if you've heard about it, seen the official images you might still be in denial that this thing is actually a pretty disturbing game, that other players are trolling you. The production values is one major part of why I think this game is so impactful. The art is high quality and perfectly emulates a Japanese production.

The writing is excellent and it's here where it's not quite like other VN games, let's say. I'm not going to spoil if you haven't played it yet, but "it goes places" and it kind of just keeps going and going. What happens is for you to discover.

  • Because it's a happy game where you beat drums and don't kill anyone. Everyone is happy, everything is fun and we're all friends, not competitors. Fuck you.
