Stick placement has nothing to do with the Dualshock's design problems. The issues for me have always been that the shoulder buttons are awful, they feel so loose in the controller almost like you have to push down way farther for them to even register. Large convex heads on the sticks feel awful, as if I'm playing with an actual arcade joystick except I'm only using my thumb. Last but not least the sticks themselves feel incredibly loose similar to the way the triggers feel. Overall there's just a tightness that isn't there. On the other hand, I've never had a dualshock stick lose its ability to register that I'm moving it as far as possible in one direction, whereas I've had both my 360 controllers do it to the point that I've had to take a pair of scissors and shave down the casing around the sticks so they could move more.
Hopefully the DS4 improves on that, because in the last generation the 360 had a much nicer feeling controller to the point that I always get multiplats on the 360 instead of the PS3.
