TeddyB's Game of the Year 2020

This has been a horrible year, and I think that gaming might've been the one thing that saved most people from losing their minds. This year I created a top ten that I'm happy with, which is made out of the twenty-one games I played that were released this year. Overall, I think I played about 58 games, where "played" is ranging from "I touched this game and it wasn't really for me" to "I 100% the game and I never ever want to look at it again". I'll list them all, even the games I missed that I wanted to play but wait for my PS5 to arrive. Although I enjoyed a lot of games this year, none of the ones that were released this year were anywhere near the best I've ever played, except maybe one, but they were not bad games throughout. There are some spoilers, so you've been warned if I forget to tag the stuff.

P.S.

Before I forget, shoutout to everything Yakuza and the developer Ryu ga Gotoku Studio. Excellent series that everybody should play.

Honorable mentions for 2020

Horace (Switch)

Saw this game on https://metacritic.com a couple of months ago and it seemed interesting. Bought it on the sale only yesterday, so I've managed to put in like 3 hours into it and it is really charming in a weird sort of way. It is a platformer that sometimes feels like a metroidvania. The story is told through the eyes of Horace, a robot with an artifical intelligence. He learns early on that his goal is to clean up a total of one million items. Some stuff later happens and he is turned off and left alone in a storage and wakes up years later to find the world in shambles. That's about all that I've experienced and I love it so far. But I've heard some negative stuff about the game so therefore I cannot include the game in my top ten. I just haven't played enough of it to create a good enough opinion on it.

CrossCode (Switch)

The game within a game. Basically the answer to Ready Player One in the way that you play as a character that is in a MMORPG, so really just a pixelated RPG. If I remember correctly, the main character isn't a player in the world of "CrossWorlds" as the game is intended, but rather wakes up outside of the game as the character she is playing and must play the game to regain her memories. I wish I played more of this game than I did, because it played really well and it had an interesting story as far as I could tell.

Star Wars: Squadrons (PS4)

I played far to little of this game, but god damn was it fun. This'll be the game that I'll play more of during 2021. It plays really well, the controls feel good. I played a bit of the story and some online sessions (don't do that before you actually learn how to play the game first, I really underestimated that part).

WTF mentions of 2020

Marvel's Iron Man VR (PS4)

This might be one of the worst games I have ever played. It was infuriating from its beginning all through its short story to its utterly worthless ending. I really felt that I should finish this piece of shit called a game, so I pushed myself to go through the whole fucking thing. The one thing that makes me more angry with these kind of games is the amount of fucking content creators who will raise the game to the skies likely only because it's a license they love. Gameplay-wise, the game feels really bad, the missions are repetitive and really boring, the controls suck, the story is meh, the upgrade system do not make any difference.

Watch Dogs: Legion (PS4)

This is game, unfortunately, on my top ten. The WTF that I get from this game is about how fucking broken it is at times. The game plays fine, but it was released way too early. They should've given it a couple months more to polish some parts. The most frustrating part is that I have 92% of all the trophies, I can't get two out of the three I have left because the game cannot understand that I completed all the collectibles, but with different operatives/agents. I mean, what the fuck is the point of the whole game if not to play it with different agents and to change between the agents you have in your team?

  • Played on: Nintendo Switch

Quantity: Defeated Hades three times in about 30-40 runs.

I love me some Supergiant games and this game is, as you can tell, no exception. The fact that I've come to the realization that I really love the roguelike and roguelite genres is also a big reason for me adding this as my number one. The way they fit story elements even though you don't finish runs is awesome. The gameplay is fun and the music is, as always, amazing. Big shoutout to the voice cast and the music creator Darren Korb.

  • Played on: Standard PS4

Quantity: Finished campaign, all side quests and got the Platinum Trophy.

The game that I never really cared about when watching E3 or other shows where they dropped GoT-trailers. But booting this game up and playing it through was almost pure joy. It is so beautiful and I almost love everything that is japanese culture. The gameplay is fun. But as the Kinda Funny crew says, it is a game ass game. Compared to TLoUP2 and even RDR2 where they seem to strive more for reality than anything else, GoT doesn't hide what it is, and it might've been the palate cleanser I needed.

    Quantity: Finished the campaign.

I have to admit that I didn't get the hype around the first game in the series. For me the highest praise I could give the game in 2014 was its prologue, it blew me away and neither gameplay nor story could ever live up to that first moment. Maybe I was too immature, I don't know. But re-reading the plot to catch up for the release of Part 2, I realized that the story in the first game actually was pretty good. The story in the second game is (don't kill me) even better. It is really thought through in a way I just wasn't expecting it to be. The only problem with the game is that the ludonarrative dissonance is strong in this one. I chose a way of playing which meant that I was killing a lot of enemies, and that way of playing kind of destroys everything in regard to the story that is being told. But if looking only at the cut-scenes and the story that is built then this is truly an amazing game. Naughty Dog knows storytelling, they just need to find the balance between that and the game itself.

    P.S.

Just like FFVIIR, this game never wanted to fucking end. The Epilogue went on for such a long fucking time, they could've just made the Epilogue into The Last of Us Part III. Sometimes them developers don't respect ones time...

  • Played on: Standard PS4

    Quantity: Finished the campaign.

I never played the original back in 1997, I didn't even know what Final Fantasy was at that time. I belong to the group of people who didn't experience a Final Fantasy game until Final Fantasy XII, which I loved. I've heard about everything that can be said about VII, that it is the best in the series, that it is the most overrated in the series. But not having anything to compare the game to I felt I could tackle it with an open mind. I loved every minute of it... for the first 2/3's of the game. The game was more linear than I truly thought it would be since XIII got so much criticism for being linear and this one being so loved. The problem with the game started with the last third of the story. It dragged on so long I almost didn't want to keep playing it anymore. As far as I understand the ending opens up for new possibilities and even though I got bored with later parts of the game, I am still looking forward to part 2.

I never thought that I could enjoy DOOM until I tried the 2016-reboot at a friends in 2017-18. I got hooked instantly and bought the game on my own PS4. Eternal improves on every aspect of the first game and adding platforming and a new way to handle ammo, health, shield and fuel. The result of that is that the player can't just jump in guns blazing, but actually pushes the player to think on the next move whilst still having to have fast reaction times. This makes the game really, really hard but a lot of fun.

  • Played on: Standard PS4

Quantity: Somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of the main story.

I love the Yakuza series, whether it is the spin-off Judgment or Fist of the North Star. I played most of the series games this year and it has been a blast! This one feels different but still recognizable from the earlier games. I love Ichiban as a character and the new setting which this time around is Yokohama. The way that Ryu ga Gotoku Studio mixes stupid fun with serious story-telling is really good. I can't wait to finish this game in 2021.

  • Played on: Standard PS4

Quantity: Played through the story and got 100%.

VanillaWares new title which was first released in Japan last year. I love Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir and Dragon's Crown so I've waited for this game for some time. 13 Sentinels is still partly a 2D sidescroller, but this time the game is divided into story mode and a gameplay mode, where the gameplay mode is some kind of top-down turned based tactical game. I loved the story and how it played out. The biggest problem I had with it at times is that the story confused a lot more than it had to. There were also some questionable over sexualized design choices made to some of the younger characters in the game. But I guess that is just how the japanese be rollin'.

  • Played on: Nintendo Switch

Quantity: Got to the game credits which can be achieved in a matter of days, but kept playing a while longer.

The savior of the Corona/Covid-19 pandemic. It got so popular that Garry Whitta made a fucking talkshow where he interviewed celebrities and had small concerts and shit. Nevertheless, it was a nice way to spend my time, the nostalgia from the times when I played New Leaf on the 3DS felt really good. The problem with this game is that little is actually new, it is constrained in ways that hurts the player way more than it should.

  • Played on: Standard PS4 and PC

Quantity: Got about halfway through the season levels before I stopped playing.

Fall Guys is the multiplayer game of the year for me. It felt so fresh to play, a type of Battle Royale where there felt like you actually had a chance to succeed. Launch-wise it was pretty bad since they apparently didn't expect so many players. This is probably the most fun I've had playing a multiplayer game.

  • Played on: Standard PS4

Quantity: I played through the story and all the side quests.

I really liked this game, apart from its bugs and problems that are, to the day of writing this, still not fixed (I want my god damned Platinum Trophy, grr). I liked Watch Dogs 2 and Legion was actually better. It was really fun and I liked the concept of a team a lot (when it worked). Had it worked then this game would be higher up in my list. I loved roaming around in London and I could actually recognize a lot of the more known places from when I was there in 2016, although the scaling of the map is done so that lesser known streets are barely recognizable. But I guess that's the way it has to be.
