For real though, GDevelop is the first time I've made it past the "let me try to plug things together" phase of a game engine. As mentioned above, it combines a lot of what I like about Stencyl and Construct, but is free. Give it a shot.
For anyone who wants to see how I made what I did, I've uploaded the project files (which can be loaded into GDevelop) and added comments throughout it. You can grab it at the same link to play the game: http://silver-streak.itch.io/not-a-vania.
Since you've already tried FFXIV, I can second @fezrock's recommendation around The Secret World.
Either give the original a shot, or try The Secret World Legends.
Legends completely redoes the combat system to be more understandable, and in some cases completely changes their structure. The world is fantastic in that game, and it's the only MMO I know of which has Jeffrey Combs voicing a character.
I talk more about it in my blog post, but I wanted to throw a thank you to @zandravandra here for this post and others inspiring me to make a game. Also, I wanted to give a shoutout to GDevelop for being a free equivalent to Construct 3 or Stencyl (with a bit more flexibility if you want it).
Now having some kind of demo/game down, I feel like I'm ready to team up with folks for next Giant Rom. Kind of excited.
Exception: Unless you are a Best Buy Gamer Club Unlocked member and your membership is about to expire. Then Preorder every game you want as far out as you can through the website. You won't be billed for the preorder and can cancel it or return it (unopened) as needed, but get your GCU discount on it. Mine expired in October of 2018. I have games at $48 before tax all the way through 2020.
