Well damn seems you forgot the main attraction/difference that PC games have over console games and that's their replay value. I mean I'm still playing UT2004, BF2, ET:Wolfenstein, F.E.A.R. (Combat),  and America's Army. I mean have you seen the mods being made and released for COD4? Did you know there's someone who actually has a working (flyable) jet plane in COD4? (link: http://www.xfire.com/video/16c77/). But I'm not here to change your opinion because as long as I game on PC and there's enough people in one server to play every game (online) then I'm happy.

I played the game and I had so much fun. I remember I would spend days just running around wreaking havoc and blowing up anything that wasn't moving around, but there was also times when I would take it slow and play it Arnold Schwarzenegger "Predator style" (I would've played like Rambo if they gave me a bow and a bandanna). Hell I even made a (pointless) video of me playing "Stalker style". Also the online multiplayer was amazing, but frustrating to get used to when you're not used to having to earn your weapons each time you respawn, but once you get the noob out of your system you'll have a good time. Oh and popping someone's head off about a mile away from atop a cliff can't get any sweeter.

"I use Avast and have been for four years, never had a problem.  It updates frequently and the updates are really small

Just having anti-virus isn't enough, you should consider a multi-layered approach that includes trojan scanners, a firewall and anti-spyware software as well.

Comodo Firewall

Spyware Blaster

Spybot Search and Destroy

Ad-Aware

A Squared

MVPS Hosts

MS Defender

Combine these with safe browsing habbits and you shouldn't get infected."
I just wanted to share that I use Comodo Internet Security and AVG anti-virus (free version) and the only complaint I have to write about is that Comodo will pop up everytime (initially) a program new or old wants to do something (connect to the internet, access other files, and even overwriting its own when updating!), but as long as you take the time to add all the programs you use on a regular basis you shouldn't have any problems.

"I reckon that at resolutions over 1680x1050, it would be prudent to go over 512 MB."
To add to what Normin wrote, I believe from now to the next 2 years or so, you'll be just fine with 512mb of ram, but from what I've seen from the steady progression of games requiring more and more ram, 512mb will be the new "recommended" (required imo) amount to run future blockbuster hits at even 1280x1024 rez. That's just my honest opinion.

I want to say Fallout 3, but to stay safe (and not get my hopes to high) I'm gonna go with FarCry 2
