Take the case of a customer who purchases a music CD in-store. This same customer is entitled to rip a digital copy of the album for use of the copyrighted material on his/her iPod.
If this same customer were to purchase a book from the bookstore, and paid for the copyrighted material, it is therefore not unethical (albeit still illegal) to obtain a downloaded pdf version of his/her purchased book.
