  • This game did so many things that felt like it was specifically poking fun at both the gameplay patterns that have been ingrained in us as a gaming society (the completionism mindset, trying to find and get everything, trying to exhaust all dialogue options with every NPC) and not picking a political side. While the game is definitely left-leaning and somewhat ridicules right-wing notions, it definitely calls you out more if you don't pick a stance on a particular issue. It wants you, and the character, to have an opinion.

    All in all, it was very easy to get entranced by Revachol, warts and all. I'm amazed that a game that is almost exclusively about walking around and talking to people for 35 hours straight managed to keep me playing - a testament to incredible writing and the strong characters, which I would argue is the strongest point of the entire game. I wanted Kim Kitsuragi to approve of my actions. I wanted to impress Joyce Messier, who felt like a kindred spirit. And I begrudgingly tolerated Evrart Claire, because he had information critical to the case.

    I've heard that this game is supposed to have a lot of similarities to Planescape: Torment and after playing this I have somewhat of an itch to play that as well. As you often do in games (and maybe in life, who am I to judge), you wake up with no memory whatsoever as to your identity or where you are. Piece by piece, the picture comes together and you and the protagonist explore the slum city of Martinaise together to solve a murder.

    While the murder case takes center stage, there are so many side missions that are interesting, because they let you interact with more of the characters, which are the real main attraction. I haven't even touched on the whole RPG aspect of this game, in which you put points into 24 different stats, manifested as actual personas that chime in with dialogue and help you make sense of the world through their own particular lens. It's so very, very good.
