I absolutely love Tetris. I've played hundreds of hours of Tetris DS alone. But Tetris Effect is, if you ask me, the worst version of Tetris of all time. Seeing it win is... baffling, to say the least. It's even worse than Tetris Ultimate. It's not even Tetris, it's the same old tired Mizuguchi explosion of sound and visuals with no substance. He does the same trick in every single game he produces: Lumines, REZ, Child of Eden and now Tetris Effect. The guy could do the same with checkers or sudoku and everyone would praise it as a massive revolution.
For a second year in a row, Giant Bomb's GOTY is a massive disappointment for me. Yikes.
Glad you enjoyed it, Jan, but yikes. Oof. Let's Go halted in its tracks my 20-year-long interest in this franchise. The very idea of future games using this template destroys any hope I may have for the 2019 game...
I guess this is the game that's going to win everything this year... but I can't seem to muster any kind of interest in it. I'm sure it's very well done, but I've been done with Rockstar's open-world formula since GTA IV. This game looks like more of the same.
Third thought: Cool list. I wouldn't personally put Horizon over Zelda, but it's nice to see games that won't appear in other lists, like Mr. Shifty or Wildlands.
@teigen: PUBG is literally the third time Brendan Greene made the same basic game. Classifying it as a "debut" is the same as saying that Rocket League is a debut.
