After watching the first five episodes of The Ancient Magus Bride, all I can say is that I'm thoroughly impressed. It truly feels like "shonen for adults" (That is probably an oxymoron, but I digress.)
I think because I'm in my late 20s, I do tend to put a premium into the demographic the average manga-to-anime adaptation has. When I think shonen, I think Dragon Ball Z, which nowadays is just something I'm just not gonna get into again, no matter how good DB Super has apparently become. This is all the more reason I find The Ancient Magus Bride all the more interesting. At its core you have a severely damaged girl named Chise, relinquishing her agency and freedom to a "man" with a skull as a head, but then, just like Beauty and the Beast, the man is somewhat benevolent (for noble reasons or otherwise, the show is not revealing all its cards just yet.) and he may be able to love.
Just like Girls' Last Tour (another terrific fall anime) believes that no matter what, there's beauty in the world to behold, The Ancient Magus Bride, seems to believe that there's always a reason to get out of the bed in the morning and be a better person, and that hits home to me. Who knew shonen could pull those strings to my cranky old late 20s self?
