while leveling matchmaking for missions is just fine and if your gear isn't horrible and you've been crafting soloing missions isn't to bad. Most people are quiet (xbox one) and its while some strategy is needed its mostly self survival. Beyond that at max level hard missions are kinda the same the only time you really need to strats and coordination i'd say are the challenge modes.

The dark zone is another matter. Doing it solo is definitely something you can do and get your fair share of loot and fun i'd say matching up is where its at. I've done some random match making groups and while not as efficient as your friends but overall it went well. Right now the state of the game really hurts you to go rogue so while people are trying to get to dz50 people aren't going to mess around with going rogue. Just don't make it easy for someone to drop a grenade on the group of you then you'll be fine.

tl;dr match making has been a positive overall experience for me and got me through 99% of the content. Challenge modes are the only place you need to coordinate.
