My Top 10 of 2021

ForceCommander uploads German Let's Play Videos on Youtube on an almost daily basis.

This year's write up of my Top 10 will be drastically reduced. I enjoy writing and sharing my thoughts, but GB's list system is sadly too frustrating to keep bashing my head against year after year.
It refuses updates if you take too long and every time you wish to edit your list, it will always remove your formatting, as well as sometimes lose text or embedded images.

If you are interested in hearing more and are capable of understanding German, you can always watch my Top 10 Video.
This list will still feature some honorable mentions, which you won't find in the video (those have my Flops of the Year).

This year I played exactly 200 games and finished 58 of them. Here is my list of games I played this year.

List items

  • I loved how serious this game was from the get-go. I enjoyed how good (as well as important to the story) the six members of your party were. The gameplay was almost addicting, since you don't rely on mana to cast your spells/skill like some of the other Tales games did.

The story and skids tackled some important topics (and the latter without completely losing its funny or silly moments), which other games might just gloss over.

It will be hard going back to the previous, not yet played, Tales games since this one did so much right and improved on the Tales formula.

  • I knew this game was good. I played the original way back. But who in their right mind owns a Vita to experience Golden?

Thankfully, Atlus randomly decided to bring P4G to Steam and after 1 1/2 playthroughs (~120hours): Yes, Persona 4 Golden is extremely good and I can't tell you anymore if P5 is better than this game.

  • Not much of a fan of the racing genre, but this game does so many things right. Its just fun driving around Mexico and partaking in all kinds of races or open world events.

(But it really needs to work on its UI. Some things aren't explained and others are hidden behind way too many windows)

  • First time playing this game thanks to the Nintendo Switch Mario FOMO collection and its impressive how well this game holds up today.

  • While a lot gets crammed into the story, as well as some of the new characters being extremely unlikable, its such a visually impressive as well funny and memorable journey.

  • After a roughly half year break last year, It has been a blast to see all the additions from the "missed" updates as well as the new 2.0 Patch. The new DLC, Happy Home Paradise, also adds a neat "new" way to design houses for your own, as well as random, villagers.

  • We waited a very long time and this game didn't disappoint. It captures the magic of the first game and greatly improved on the formula.

  • Extremely fun gameplay and great world-design that gets hampered by dumb AI, world building that is too easily missed, as well as a wet-fart (canon) ending.

  • Its so unique in its tedium that its actually enjoyable to see Ryu interact with his surroundings and clumsy trying to progress the story.

  • Battlegrounds is a game mode that I simply play way too much. Its so much fun, yet it can also be so frustrating thanks to its huge reliance on RNG. Its a love-hate relationship that will easily continue into next year.

  • The remake lacks some of the modern Quality of Life improvements one might expect nowadays, as well as is ugly as sin with its new chibi look, but its still based on a pretty good 2D Pokemon game. The highlight, though, is how glitchy those two games are. If you were fortunate enough and deactivated automatic patching, you will encounter a game that can be broken in so many ways.

Its surprisingly fun to see whats possible and do what you shouldn't be able to do.

  • The switch version severely improved on the original 3DS game. The new Mii system made it fun to create and share all kinds of characters and creatures. The gameplay mix of RPG and social life simulation is fun, with the latter maybe being a tad too repetitive.

  • What looks to be a colorful and humorous adventure game quickly turns into something far more serious (and at times horrifying)
