2018 Top 5

This year was chock full of incredible games. I could have easily filled a top 10 but I've gotta stick with the format! Here are my Top 5 games of 2018.

List items

  • In the same way that I didn't expect to ever be amazed by Doom two years ago, I had thought I was pretty much done with God of War as a series and yet here we are. The combat in this game feels as though it gets better and more creative as the game progresses. It is a AAA visual masterpiece. It has a great cast of characters with fleshed out stories and fantastic dialog. It creates something wholly new while pulling from it's long and kind of bad history. What a fantastic game.

  • This game is maybe an hour or so long but it somehow captures the feeling of a relationship perfectly. Just an incredible pleasure to play and I'm so happy games like this exist.

  • Not only is the web swinging as good as it's ever been, the combat is also enjoyable too and it's a visual treat to watch in motion. Cap it off with one of the best Spider-Man stories ever told in any format and you've got one of my top 5 games this year.

  • This game is to VR what Mario 64 was to 3D platformers. In the same way that Mario 64 proved that 3D platforming games are not only possible but can be extremely good, Astro Bot has proven that VR games can be full on joyous experiences in ways that aren't possible outside of VR. This game had me smiling start to finish and at the end of every level I was afraid that it had peaked but every next level was full of new and fresh ideas right up until the last boss fight which was also amazing. This game has gotten me excited for the future of VR games in a way I didn't think was possible.

  • A heartwarming and special story. Fantastic music. Perfect execution of 2D platforming. I did not expect to enjoy this game as much as I did when I started and finishing it was bittersweet. Really loved this game.
