GOTY 2020

Let's not talk about how big of a shit pie this year has been, ok? Let's think about how we should have a better appreciation of everything.

Let's talk about the games I appreciated this year... some more than others. This year was kind of dry for new games, at least for me. I spent a lot of time with older games and digging through Game Pass. I'm posting this before Cyberpunk 2077 even releases and therefore it won't be on this list. I don't mind that given that it is releasing so late and that's ok.(Update: the list is better off with out Cyberpunk 2077 as it turns out.)

So here are the games NOT released in 2020 that I played. In no particular order...

  • Children of Morta - This is a fun and sometimes frustrating game. The thing I liked least about it was that it is run based. That's me though and not the game. I preferred to play with the bow character but sometimes it was satisfying to get up in there with the mashy mashy characters. I would recommend playing this game.
  • World War Z - It's an enjoyable but forgettable shooter. I played solo and offline maybe its more fun online, I don't know and don't care to find out. I don't regret playing the game but also don't think anybody needs to play it. I couldn't even tell you what happened in the story or how it ended.
  • Ryse: Son of Rome - Ok, confession. I played this on PC some time ago because it was super cheap. I played it again because it was on Game Pass and had achievements. Yes, I'm ashamed of myself but I still don't think it's a bad game. Go play it and let's discuss.
  • Halo: Reach - Another confession... this is my favorite Halo game. Anybody can argue that with me and it won't change my mind. I thoroughly enjoyed playing it again and it looked beautiful on PC. I'd play it again and would suggest others to do as well.
  • Borderlands 3 - I got talked into this by a buddy and he subsequently bailed playing it with me. Thanks man. What didn't bail on me was the game itself. It was Borderlands. That's not a bad thing. It had moment that I rolled my eyes at but it had more moments that I had fun with. Go ahead and play on in this one.
  • Dying Light - Same friend, same bail. Never went back to it. Do with it what you will. Seemed to have something but not for me.
  • Darksiders 3 - For fuck's sake, never play this game. It's bad. The more I played it the worse it got. Game Pass did me a solid when they pulled it during my play through. Again, never play this game.
  • Darksiders Genesis - I like this game because it reminds me of Diablo 3, which I loved. This game... not so much. It's interesting but just has some mechanical issues that I don't care fore. If you have Game Pass try it, if you don't you can pass.

That's about it. I jumped in and out of some other games but none that I spent significant time with or at least not enough that I feels worth mentioning. That is unless you want to talk about online solitaire.

List items

  • Last is usually least but... - Look, I'm old enough that I played this on the original console release. Nostalgia didn't do anything for me with this one though. Pass.

  • Beyond Bland - This game. Oh, this game. Highs, lows. The Beyond Light expansion just didn't work for me. It just reminded me why I don't play Destiny like I use to. I feel like the way they built this expansion was an excuse to grind, which I'm not a fan of.

  • Second verse, same as the first - Frankly, I didn't like the original and this one I didn't care for either. There, I said it. Get mad if you want to. It's a good game but not a great game. The combat and controls stink. At the end of it , I liked the antagonist better than the main character. I get it, people are the real monsters. Didn't need this game to tell me, knew that already.

  • Colt Seavers - I heard about this game and thought it was about the old tv show. I was wrong but I enjoyed it anyway. I played a lot of sessions chasing victory but ultimately not achieving it. Randomly I hop back in but I wonder what kind of legs this game has.

  • Tell me why it's not #1? - I really wanted to make this my #1, truly I did. I just couldn't. I love the Life is Strange series and this is a great sister to those. However, there is something that they just missed on here. The first two chapters were great. Then in the third one it felt like they rushed in the vain of finishing up. It's one of a few games I wish they had drug out further.

  • Let's get tactical! - I like Gears. I like XCOM. This was great. I didn't know which way this would go when they announced it but I'm glad they did it. I doubt we'll ever see a sequel. But... what if we did?????
