Dovey: Best of 2009

List items

  • Pure entertainment. Not since the days when I was kid, playing Zelda have I played a game non-stop from start to finish. Given my busy work schedule, any game that has me sitting down with it for an hour is an accomplishment... Uncharted 2 was something special and deserves my vote.

  • Criticise all you want for being more of the same with a fresh coat of paint. But it is what I wanted from Resident Evil 5 and you have to admit, it's a shiny coat of paint.

  • Another vote for the nostalgia product. Shadow Complex promised that Metroidvania experience and delivered. Those were evil days. There were no achievements or trophies for accomplishing that 100% and although they exist today, It could easily have none and there would be more satisfaction for the devoted than achieving a one million point gamer score.

  • Easily one of the most unique experiences to date for me. Heck I even wrote a review for it, which took time and that is time I don't have. Even has my Mother wanting a PS3 just for this game.

  • Assassin Creed II is the most improved sequel of this year. Assassin Creed provided a solid framework for the franchise, but its lack of rewarding gameplay and other minor issues made it a new experience which felt like I was completing chores for little pocket money. Assassin Creed II rectifies all that and makes for a more complete and rewarding entry for the franchise... Now if only the story made some sense.

  • One of the funniest and most offence games of the year. Gets in my list because I don't know how It got through Australian Classification... They must have been playing it on mute.

  • Whilst It ain't no Starcraft II, It reminded me why I love strategy games and why I wish I had more time to sink into them. But its successful implementation of role playing elements made it a unique experience and expands much on the "Hero" idea that was used in Warcraft III. in a year of games mutating genres, Dawn of War II was one of the best at doing so, defining the strategy/role playing game and no doubt many others will borrow from.

  • It makes it in despite the let down and emptiness the campaign leaves you with. I have never had so much fun tinkering with different classes and unlocks and in doing so Modern Warfare 2 allows a strategy component to have more effect within the game rather than pure skill dictating your enjoyment.

  • It's unfortunate that my 360 died upon obtaining this little beauty. Having only played so little, its feels like Diablo... if it were a first person shooter. That is an idea that just shouldn't work, but it did. I want to return now, but it just sits there and taunts me until I fix my 360. It's probably the game i have spent the least time playing this year. It makes it in the list cause It is probably been the most fun. It would be higher if not for the 360.
