Rock Band DLC Review for 7/8/08 (crossposting remix edition)

(Because I want to contribute a little something to  the site, and I'm too lazy to do anything new right now, I'm gonna repost my last two weeks of Rock Band DLC Reviews that I did over on 8bitfix.com. Hope you enjoy!)

Alright ladies and gents, it's Tuesday so that means it's the highlight of my week (...aw that sounds sad) NEW ROCK BAND DLC!

This week we have one hell of a week as we get 4 tracks. Two from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and two from your favorite band and mine, RUSH. From RHCP we get two tracks from their latest album Stadium Arcadium. Snow ((Hey Oh)) and Tell Me Baby. Both good songs to listen to, but do they translate well to Rock Band?

As for Rush, usually the norm when Rush is involved, we get covers. It's happened with Tom Sawyer, Limelight, and Working Man. Until now. COVERS NO MORE. This week we get Closer to the Heart from A Farewell to Kings and Working Man. Now, you're saying to yourself, "We already have Working Man, why should we pay for it again, what's going on this is madness!?!" Well for one, if you make a Sparta joke, you're banned. Second, this is a master, and not only a master, but an alternate take of the song with a different solo and everything. According to Harmonix, the guys in the band were "really excited" to see this version of Working Man in the game, so if they're excited, you all should be. Welp, on to the review! We'll get the bad out of the way first:

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Snow ((Hey Oh))

<b>Offical Rock Band Store Rating:</b>
Band: <font color="red">****</font><font color="grey">*****</font>
Guitar: <font color="red">*********</font>
Drums: <font color="red">******</font><font color="grey">***</font>
Vocals: <font color="red">*</font><font color="grey">********</font>
Bass: <font color="red">****</font><font color="grey">*****</font>

Vocals: This song is really easy on vocals, but not only that, it has SEVENTY SEVEN PHRASES. I personally got 399k on it on my 2nd run. Top score as we speak on XBL is 412k, so if you want a song that gives you a metric fuckton of points, this is the song for you.

Guitar: Ugh. This song is stupid hard on guitar. Like, "make you wanna punch your mother" hard. "Well mabye u n00b u just suk at geetar." you might say. Fine, don't believe me? Check this out: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNFejiCtcl0">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNFejiCtcl0</a> (Sup CorporalGregg)

Ok, watched it? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Bass: Snow bass comes in two flavors. Delicious calm, easy parts and Ben and Jerry's Applechord Delight. As you can see in the above video, it starts off fine enough then by the end of the song you're bombarded with super fast chordchordchordsinglenotesinglenotechord. It's crazy.

FINAL VERDICT: Unless you like painful guitar songs that make you wanna hate life, then by all means, get it. It's fun on vocals, too, but that may not be worth it. Pass.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Tell Me Baby

<b>Offical Rock Band Store Rating:</b>
Band: <font color="red">******</font><font color="grey">***</font>
Guitar: <font color="red">****</font><font color="grey">*****</font>
Drums: <font color="red">******</font><font color="grey">***</font>
Vocals: <font color="red">***</font><font color="grey">******</font>
Bass: <font color="red">*******</font><font color="grey">**</font>

Vocals: This song is probably the most fun out of today's pack to sing, if only for the fast rapping parts. Kiedis was always good at that, so until Give It Away comes out on Rock Band 2, this'll have to do.

Guitar: Pretty fun on guitar, not to hard, not too easy. Just right, as you might say.

Bass: Much like Snow's bass, Tell Me Baby's bass also hates you. It's earned the honor of being one of now two songs that I've ever TWO STARRED on Bass. The other being Thrasher. It's a crazy weird HO/PO riff that doesn't ever let up. THANKS, FLEA. God. :(

FINAL VERDICT: I'd say get this one, the vocals are fun and the guitar is, too. Just stay away from bass. Ugh.

Rush - Closer to the Heart: I don't know what finally got into Rush to give Harmonix master tracks, but man am I glad they did. Maybe Neil Peart needed more money for Ayn Rand novels or something, I don't know, but bless them for it.

Guitar: <font color="red">****</font><font color="grey">*****</font>
Drums: <font color="red">***</font><font color="grey">******</font>
Vocals: <font color="red">****</font><font color="grey">*****</font>
Bass: <font color="red">***</font><font color="grey">******</font>

Vocals: Man, it sure is weird singing Real Geddy Lee instead of Fake Geddy Lee in these Rush songs. Somehow though, it feels just right. Geddy's vocal range is such an enigma. You can either sing like him, or you can't. Fortunately for me, I can sing like a grandma and be proud of that fact. (I love you Geddy please don't hurt me)

Guitar: This song is about somewhere between Tom Sawyer and Limelight as far as Rush songs go. Not as hard as Tom, but harder than Limelight. It's Rush though, so no matter the difficulty, it's gonna be fun.

Bass: The Bass is pretty simple, but still manages to be fun. It's not one of the stronger Rush bass songs (COME ON RED BARCHETTA) but it's worth it.

FINAL VERDICT: Duh, get it. It's RUSH for God's sake, but even if you somehow manage to not enjoy Rush (philistine) you will still love this song.

RUSH - Working Man (Vault Edition): This is an alternate take of Working Man taken from the sessions of the Self Titled album. It stays true enough to the take they used, but there's a few differences in the guitar chart and the drums are a bit different. For the most part Bass and Vocals are exactly the same. But, this is a master track so you should get it anyway.

Bass: <font color="red">******</font><font color="grey">***</font>

Vocals: Like I said, these are similar to the original Working Man cover vocals, wiht the exception of this is actually Geddy instead of Fake Geddy. Trust me, I like Real Geddy much better. It was easier to me to sing as I knew exactly how this one went from listening to the original track so many times.

Guitar: Ok, so this is a hard song. That being said, it's easier than the cover version and honestly, way more fun. This is probably one of my favorite guitar songs to play in the entire game. I love it.

Bass: While the RHCP songs were hard and spitting in your face on bass, Working Man on bass is like that one personal trainer you had that gives you a hard time, but comforts you and pushes you to be better. It also buys you a protein shake after a hard set of butterfly presses, but that's beside the point. Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, Working Man bass is hard, but super, super fun. It doesn't stray much from the original version.

FINAL VERDICT: You know what I'm gonna say. Even if you've gotten the cover version already, get the Vault Edition. Do it. Now.

Welp, that about does it for this week. Get your hands on Tell Me Baby, Closer to the Heart, and Working Man (Vault Edition) and stay far away from Snow ((Hey Oh)). It'll only end in tears.

Join us next week when we'll have DLC from some English band, The Whats, or something. The Why. I dunno. Probably won't be any good.

Oh who am I kidding, THE WHO 12 PACK OF MOTHERFUCKING AWESOME: NEXT WEEK!
