So is EX just a third tier, not an Unfinished because the development is done and the game's out in a week, but not a regular Quick Look because it's a guided vertical slice with members of the dev team? I was confused for a bit. The unfamiliar QL logo threw me even further off.
I feel like every time the subject of the games scope comes up the developers start to talk about their limited budget and how they try to keep the game small. It's a little disheartening to hear.
Yeah I noticed that too. It makes me worried the game is going to be pretty short.
EX is when there are devs on the video. I think it's usually in cases where the game is being shown around on a press tour, but GB doesn't have independent access to a preview build. So it's kind of the only way they can get footage?
Obsidian has been bringing talking about the small scope for like a year now. I hope it's just trying to manage expectations, because they want people to know it's not going to be as big as something like Fallout. Which I'm fine with, but I hope it's not too small. There's a big difference between a 10-12 hour game and a 20-30 game. Those South Park games were pretty short, as I recall.
Brad explaining ray tracing about 10 minutes in reminds me of this PC Gamer article from the late 90s about upcoming tech trends that were supposedly going to change gaming. One of the things it talked about was flight modeling in flight sims - supposedly the old way of doing it was to model all the different ways a plane would behave at different speeds, altitudes, and positions. But in THE FUTURE the goal was to just build a physics model, then tag all the parts of the plane (flaps, wings etc) with values for weight, drag, thrust and lift, and then let the plane just fly.
I don't know how much of that actually came to pass; certainly physics models are pretty prevalent now. But ray tracing feels like the same thing; after a certain point it just becomes simpler to model how light behaves and interacts with objects, rather than trying to duplicate how it looks.
I was excited when I heard "Titanfall battle royale" until I learned it doesn't have any mechs. Still might check it out since it's free, but that's a bit of a disappointment.
Yeah...with no mechs and no parkour stuff I don't see what distinguishes it from any other battle royale game. That's the stuff I like about Titanfall.
@demoskinos: I urge you to consider her position here.
As a junior member of staff, the only female member of staff, she is in her second GOTY discussion after having a terrible time last time out because people were being shitty to her after she apparently said "very good" too many times. Literally she tweeted how she hated the blowback after that.
And so we have the new year, and she is expressing a deeply held opinion about how she, as a woman, felt about the treatment of women, in a room full of dudes, under the spotlight of GOTY number 2, making the actual comment that her career will forever be tainted by this opinion, which is somewhat hyperbolic but not wrong, and what does she get for this? Instead of being supported, she is asked to explain her opinion, multiple times, explain why other people don't agree with her, explain basic concepts like fridging, explaing why they are bad, to HER LITERAL DIRECT MANAGER, multiple times. While everyone in the room - except Jeff, yes you are right - are sitting around silently and waiting for it to play out.
Honestly, after this experience I would probably shrink so fast I would disappear without a trace and no one would ever see me again. Abby is a fucking legend.
Yep. And she's not even saying the game's bad, she's just pointing out that its depictions of women aren't great. The fact that Vinny didn't even know what fridging is really drives home how important her perspective on that is. Long live the Nug Queen.
