Huh, I didn't realize we had a thread like this.
This year I'm trying to make reading more of a habit, especially to break up the gamin', so I guess I'll summarize what I've been up to so far.
Dad is Fat: My wife got this for me because I like Jim Gaffigan's stand up. What she didn't realize that the book is a collection of essays entirely about raising children, a pastime we have no interest in pursuing ourselves. That aside, the book is less interested in being a laugh machine and comes off more as a frank and occasionally humorous look in this guy's life as a father. Especially as a father of five kids in a two bedroom apartment in NYC. So if any of that interests you, I guess give it a read. It's pretty short, shouldn't take more than a couple of hours, or a couple of days if you're a slow reader like me.
A Wizard of Earthsea: I'm rereading this book in the wake of LuGuin's passing. I had been meaning to go back to this for a while, and the circumstances kind of gave me the kick I needed. What a great piece of fantasy here, and what a great protagonist. I'm still at the part where the main character is a teenager, but the book does such a great job at making him flawed but not obnoxious. He's a shitty, cocky, overly impatient kid who's is too eager to get in too deep into magic, but it's done in a way where you don't just want to walk away. A lot of it comes from the storytelling style, which doesn't need to detail every little conversation, so you're not overwhelmed with character flaws.
