I'm playing Darks Souls 2 for the first time. Going straight from replaying the original to this is jarring and even made a bad first impression. However it really picks up after the first few zones and I'm really enjoying it. The level and boss designs might not be as good as the other games in the series, but I'm having fun with them nonetheless.

Go for the 3DS. With that and your DS, you essentially have access to all the Pokemon games from GBA to the 3DS (god damn that's a lot of Pokemon games). There's also a good number of Zelda games between those platforms as well.

My first time playing the original Rome Total War immediately comes to mind. I had played Medieval previously, but this was on another level. The graphical fidelity and large scale of the battles blew my mind.
