@andorski: I wanted to, but the way the fans clip onto the mk-26, it doesn't really allow for that. The top and bottom of the clips ride the grill, OR, the clip goes under the grill and is pushed into the fan. Still trying to come up with a solution.

@sgtsphynx: That is almost exactly my build, except I have 16gb of RAM and no solid state. Same MOBO/CPU/GPU though. However, as a note, 60c is the thermal ceiling on the AMD FX CPU chipset, so 60 might be a little bit worrying. I had really bad thermal issues on my original build with a stock CPU cooler, but after replacing stock with the Coolermaster 212 EVO, my temps dropped from 68c at stock to 40c with a slight overclock. (my case is an ancient enermax that was originally a sun microsystems tower back in 2000.) Also, EVGA accidentally replaced the DOA 760 2gb card I originally bought with a 4gb version. shhh, don't tell anyone :P

@andorski: I could practically fit that entire thing inside my HAF 932. What are your CPU & VRM temps normally like? Impressive looking for sure!

I recently did a complete rebuild and was initially going to go for a mATX or mITX build, but instead kept my giant ass case and built in that instead. My main goal this time around was silent power. Plenty of passive airflow, quiet operation, expandability, and lots of room to overclock.

• i7-4790k at 4.5ghz on an Asus Maximus VII Hero Z97 board, Noctua NH-D14 w/ LNA's. Noctua thermal paste.
• 16gb Corsair Vengeance LP running 1600mhz XMP
• Asus GTX 780 DirectCU II OC at 1155mhz clock / 6.18ghz memory frequency
• Corsair HX 750 (Modular, fan only turns on at high load)
• A bunch of SSD's - no platter drives this time (too loud and too slow)
• No LED fans, and I disabled all LED's that I could. Clipped the power leads or disconnected others.
• 4x Corsair 120mm AF Quiet Series Fans & 3x Bitfenix Spectre Pro 230mm Fans, all at full stop when idle
• Cooler Master HAF 932 ADV. Giant, steel, heavy, and dated. But it works.

@mb: Temps are average at best. I've done hours worth of stress testing with Prime95 and Furmark at the same time. My CPU temps shoot up to 85C. GPU temps stay at the target temp of 70C, but the fan is spinning like a mofo. When gaming though my CPU temps stay around 60-65C. GPU sometimes goes up to 70C depending on how demanding the game is; I should get back to adjusting the fan curve someday. So when in practical use my PC is able to stay relatively cool.

There are definitely some sacrifices to be made when going with the ITX form factor. But given the insignificant increase in temps when the PC is under practical use, I think the trade-offs are worth it. I doubt I'll ever go back to mATX.

@andorski: That's not bad though, at least your real world temps are within normal ranges. I'm not a fan of using Prime95 anyway, to me that's like keeping a sports car's engine at redline for extended periods just to see if something will break. As long as my system is stable and temperatures are within range when I'm playing demanding games for extended periods, I'm happy.

Nice build though for sure. I'll get around to posting pictures one of these days, but mine isn't much to look at. From the outside it just looks like a black steel behemoth. Opened up, all you can see is the Noctua.

The only thing I'm unhappy with on this laptop is that it's freaking huge and heavy but I wanted the large screen and the gaming capability so... well. I guess I can't complain.

I've written some stuff about the audio setup I use on my blog here. Basically I swap around between a decent set of 2.1 creative desktop speakers, some Grado and Sennheiser cans depending on what I feel like for music and a Razer Tiamat 7.1 gaming headset for when I need to talk and/or play games with surround sound.

ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO mobo w/ Core i5K, including 16 GB of RAM. Didn't win the silicon lottery, but managed 4.4GHz, so I went from 34x clock to 44x, not shabby.

Believe it or not I am just about to buy parts for my next build. I want to make something for my nephew. Since it won't be overclocked I'm looking an an ITX build in the $650 range. But I do have a PC Parts Picker for a Micro ATX that is cheaper, like $475 (I already own a spare OS, so $475 of pure parts). I guess I'm torn about it. He's just a kid, but that cuts both ways - a small ITX would fit a kid's desk...but a cheaper Micro ATX machine is cheaper.

I might just go microATX because we will build it together, he and I could both do the bigger case because less care is needed to bend and twist wires when you have room.

@anywhereilay: What do you need to drop down to? My GTX 780/i7-4770k/16GB RAM can run ACIV at 1080p60fps.

The case is massive and keeps things pretty cool. My PC could not live without this; it is marvelous.

The GTX 980 I ordered should be delivered tomorrow! I got the GV-N980G1 flavor. According to reviews, it is a great overclocker.

The lower temps helped me get my CPU to 4.5 GHz. I am pretty sure I am done messing with it for at least a year... :3

@andorski: Hmm, kinda worrying. I put the particles down to low, although I still encounter slowdown. I get 60 for the most part, but there is consistent drops to 30, no in between, just straight down to 30.

@anywhereilay: I had the exact same problem but this thread helped me get a more stable framerate in AC IV. It's basically editing an .ini setting and/or enabling adaptive v-sync.

So i sorta went against good judgment (and the advice of you guys, heh) and bought a 5820k, yes its more then i need and yes the ram was stupid expensive but i love messing with new tech and seeing 6 cores sorta makes me giddy in a dumbass kinda way way. Actually saw some pretty massive performance increases though, i wasn't able to run wolfenstein or rome 2 all that well on my 2500k, now they run silky smooth on max settings. And im really happy with my new cooler, my idle temps are around 30 and at load its around 40-45 max, only complaint is it dose block the first PCI-E slot so i have to run my 780ti in the second slot at x8 but that really doesn't affect performance much on PCI-E 3.0. Also wasn't sure if i would have to get a new case as i got a e-atx board but it still fit in my Antec 1200 barely.

Happy with it and i think i'll be good for quite awhile now. Also at least when i build again i can reuse the ram as DDR4 should be standard by then. I'll get some pictures up here in a bit.

What kind of cooler did you get? Not one of those shit-brown/red Noctua 140mm CPU Coolers, I hope? Hey, Noctua coolers work, as do most air-fin coolers; but damn they are big and fugly sometimes.

This machine has been split into 2. One, of which is basically the same, and another which basically very little to do with this.

First, my main machine I use for games and stuff. Just ordered a new GPU for it. That gets here Monday. I had to as my old 6950 (which I replaced the 2 5770s with) is starting to die (I'm getting artifacting once and a while) and cannot handle triple monitors on Linux for some reason if I use my U2713HM in that setup (It literally just freezes as soon as I do something. No combination of distribution or drivers will solve this):

The rest of the old machine is in use as a Linux box (dedicated for school work and as a local server-type thing for our home network). The single 5770 in it can handle my triple monitor setup fine so for now if I need to use all 3 monitors for Linux stuff, I just use this machine. I tried to be as cheap as possible when rebuilding it because I didn't know how much I would use it. I use it a ton now since we are doing tons of Linux stuff at school right now. I think to get it back up and running was around $175. It can still run the Linux version of Dota 2 on low-medium, which impressed me a lot:

• CPU from old build

• One of the 5770s (the other one died) from old build
• 8GB Kingston budget-priced RAM
• 120GB Crucial SSD
• A bunch of random HDDs.
• Antec PSU that I got for 50% off (it is actually a really nice PSU. Fully modular and everything)

For both I use a USB hub built in to my main monitor, so I can switch between machines in about 1 minute. Just have to change monitor cables, which is quick enough. Peripherals for both are as follows:

• Main monitor: Dell U2713HM
• Secondary monitor: Dell U2412M
• Tertiary monitor: Dell U2312HM
• keyboard: Filco Majestouch 2 (I have one with red switches and one with brown. I mostly use the one with browns now. The one with reds is in my other room that has my music stuff. I hook it up to my Mac along with one of my G1s and an old monitor and use it when I am doing music recording stuff.)
• mouse: Logitech G1 (I own like 4 of these. I imported a bunch from Korea back when they were like $15 a piece. Now they're more expensive because they were discontinued there. They were made and sold in Korea for a few years after they were discontinued everywhere else). It's basically the perfect mouse for me. Hence why I own 4 of them.

This is the first computer I ever built, it's been a beast and still is but I don't do any overclocking or anything like that, I'd rather not.

My only regret is not going with a big tower, that massive heatsink is such a tight fit that I don't want to do any upgrading any time soon. lol So I'll be squeezing as much time as I can out of this rig of mine. I wish I got something that had an excessive amount of room, the more the better. But besides that, it's been good to me.

@jeanlucawesome: More pics if you can manage it. I like the Bitfenix cases, they are very slick indeed. I think you might grow to enjoy having a smaller case...easier to move and that case gives some nice grip points. Also, you did it, you have gotten over the hump of a build, you fit a 8 lb cat in a 5 lb sack...be proud of that!

This build was a class project (at the library) for leaning how to build a PC. Twelve student from age 11 to 60 learned about the parts of a PC and how to put them together. The ideas was to use some recycled parts and some new parts as if this were and upgrade to a home PC. In the end we only were able to put two recycled (scrubbed) hard drives and a case fan, but it was still a successful build. The original case we wanted to use was a 'find' at the dump, but despite being an "interesting" case" it proved unsound because of some loose case wires for the power/reset button, so this $29.95 case in the description was purchased to complete the build.

This PC will be used in the Atheneum Library for other projects like simple 3D printing and design, as well as some games. Over more classes we will install the OS, benchmark the system, and tweak some settings.

I plan to put a OEM copy of Win 7 Pro on it. It doesn't have much storage, but it doesn't really need much for what it will do. (I will build another in December...stay tuned.)

The back shield I/O plate is bare chrome. I plan to use my 3D printer to make a thin 2 mm plate to fit in the shield that will dress up the I/O. I will show you the process here soon, but I will have a link to it eventually on Thingaverse in case anyone else here buys the same mobo and wants a 'fancy I/O dressing'. The plate will be black with glow in the dark lettering (I have some 'green glow' PLA material to use for that.) Its a good precision design project to line up the holes an cut outs for a 3D print
