Pandemic Express is a zombie survival game in multiplayer setting, where the goal is to survive the infection and reach a train, after gearing up for the escape attempt. Thirty players start at a station, where one of the participants gets randomly infected and becomes a zombie. These zombies are player-controlled and will chase after the remaining humans.

The world is set in a post-apocalyptic, Soviet area, mostly with a rural flair. The visuals follow a flat and monochromatic polygonal style with muted colors. By default, humans are outfitted in a striped shirt and a white mask with a long nose.

    Gameplay

After being set loose, the players can run into an open world and scavenge for loot, in the vein of battle royale games, similar to the zombie mode in PUBG. Loot is strewn around in the form of weapons, like sub-machine guns. Aside from running on foot, humans can group up and command vehicles. Traversal can also be done on electrical wires, rooftops and other high places.

Zombie players possess skills to fight humans. It's also possible for the monsters to mark humans for other zombies. Infected can also throw their fellow zombies. Humans can climb walls by shooting them, which yields upward momentum. If a human player kills an enemy, the enemy will respawn with a higher chance to gain more powerful abilities. High tier abilities include being able to go into ghost form or the ability to explode when killed. Zombies who are killed respawn near their teammates.

There are air drops that can spawn in the world, which contain higher tier weaponry, such as sniper rifles. These drops are, however, visible to the enemy zombie players as well. While humans can see the train exit marker, the zombies can not.

Once humans reach the train, they need to survive this linear path for a determined amount of time. At this point, zombies will spawn on the train path. If there are human players left once the time runs out, the humans win.

    Progression

The game has a leveling system and keeps track of several stats, such as kills, headshots, time as a human or time on the train.
