So with the imminent release of the New 2ds XL I'm finding myself getting excited to get back into Nintendo's handheld space at a low price point--sorry Switch it's not your time yet.

Even though I'm excited about the 3ds games, they're already known quantities fore me. So I find myself looking into all the DS games I missed out on playing and hearing about.

There are some great lists out there showing the quality of the DS library. . .but those are old. And I'm young.

So with the power of hind sight, what are some of your favorite DS games that I should consider/absolutely buy and play, with this good lookin new handheld?

I've certainly got the most time out of my DS with Picross 3D, also Resident Evil DS and Super Mario 64 DS are good ports of their respective original games with some nice new stuff(like the 180 turn in RE and playing as luigi, wario, and yoshi in Mario).

Okamiden does not live up to the insane heights of Okami, but I still really enjoyed my time with it.

Aliens Infestation is a pretty neat metroidvania game.

    1. Ghost Trick
    2. Bowser's Inside Story
    3. 999 (although, you might be better off playing it on Steam?)

@beachthunder:The 999 games have been on my list ever since Vinny talked about one during GOTY. So I'm definitely going to play through all three.

@panfoot:Mario 64 didn't have like a weird touch control thing to it on DS?

@kingbonesaw:I am a Dragon Ball Z fan and I am bad at fighting games, so this will be great for me. I remember playing a bunch of DBZ games on GB Advance, something tells me those prolly weren't that good, I was just young.

@lentfilms:Thanks for the suggestions and the list. I knew Wario Ware was beloved but there were a few so I wasn't sure which to get first.

@xanadu:Forgot China Town Wars was a thing, good looking out.

Advance Wars Days of Ruin. The aesthetic is not as good as older entries, but the speed of the game was much snappier and I got a lot of use out of the online play.

You absolutely must not miss out on playing The World Ends With You, quite possibly my favourite game on the DS. If you were ever into the Mega Man Battle Network series, the Mega Man Star Force games are fairly good for what they are, which is games with a light story but good combat system. Radiant Historia is also a fantastic RPG, though it's getting remade on the 3DS so maybe wait for that if you're interested. It's one of the smarter time-traveling video games I've ever played. One last game that I'd recommend with a caveat is Infinite Space which is a super cool space opera RPG but can be rather obtuse with some of it's mechanics, especially in 2017. Outside of that, it gets props from me for it's fun (but totally space opera) story and ship building system.

Really, replace Elite Beat Agents with osu tatakae ouendan

Soooooooo much better, it and the second one are absolutely top notch.

    Also:

    - The Phoenix Wright series is a must play (you can get the trilogy for the 3ds digitally)

    - Infinite Space

    - Advance Wars

    - All the Castlevania games

    - Dragon quest Heroes: Rocket Slime

    - The Zelda games (first one is better)

There are probably many more that I loved, but I just can't remember.

I played it on an iPad, but Ghost Trick sure is a lot of fun, mostly on the narrative side but the gameplay isn't bad either. I wish they'd made a second one of these experimental things instead of milking the Phoenix Wright franchise with subpar sequels.

It's been a while since I played it, but I don't believe it did. Maybe some camera manipulation stuff, but I don't remember the game playing any different then the original and the only touch screen stuff I do remember was in bonus unlockable mini games.
