Mushroom Castle is the royal residence of Princess Peach, the ruler of Mushroom Kingdom. It first appeared in Super Mario 64, in which Mario must rescue the princess from the clutches of Bowser. The castle is fully explorable and serves as the game's hub from which Mario can travel to many other worlds by jumping into paintings displayed on walls throughout the residence.

Following its appearance in Super Mario 64, the castle has been a location, or at least made an appearance, in a number of Mario-related games and spin-offs, including the Mario & Luigi series of RPGs and New Super Mario Bros. series. Specifics of the castle's aesthetic appearance have differed from game to game, owing largely to the art style employed and the advancement of game hardware.
