Overview
Luxerion Cathedral is, as its name implies, a cathedral in the city of Luxerion in the game Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. It is the headquarters of the religious order that worships Bhunivelze. Access to the cathedral is restricted at first, but after completing the Luxerion main quest, Lightning can take on a mission that will earn her a key to the cathedral's service entrance.
By entering the cathedral between midnight and 6:00AM, Lightning can pay a visit to Vanille, who has spent the past thirteen years cloistered within the cathedral's walls. The first time Lightning visits, she learns that Vanille is staying wthin the cathedral by her own choice, and that she has somehow gained the ability to hear the voices of the dead. Within a chamber in the cathedral, souls of deceased, unable to be reborn, form a torrent of anguish that Vanille tries to keep at ease by listening to their woes.
The cathedral is to be the site of a ritual known as the Soulsong. Vanille has been led to believe that this ritual will release the dead from their pain, but what she hasn't been told is that the Soulsong outright destroys the souls of the deceased and erases all memory of them from the minds of the living. In effect, it makes it so that the deceased had never been born. On the final day of the game, Lightning storms the cathedral and with Fang's help reaches the ceremonial chamber, where they stop Vanille and explain the whole truth to her before the ritual can be completed.
As the world finally comes to its end, Bhunivelze makes his appearance in the guise of Hope and steals away Lightning's gathered friends before heading into the cathedral's inner-most depths. When Lightning follows him, intent on engaging in the final battle, she is transported from the cathedral to the realm of Cosmogenesis.
