As the leader of the Leone Unit, Leone and his men do not believe in any one ideology, but want to restore independence to countries without the involvement of the United States. Leone's anti-US agenda comes from an incident during the Vietnam War, where his unit leader Roger McCoy falsely accused him of being a mole. Acting on a strange voice's orders, his unit seizes Lobito Island to capture "Pythagoras," eventually revealed to be the new Metal Gear.
Initially being Snake's enemy, Leone allies with Snake and Teliko when his unit is destroyed through a mind-control drug by ACUA troops. However, Leone eventually succumbs to this same drug and Snake and Teliko have to kill him. As he is dying, he asks Snake to pass on the message about his time during Vietnam: "It wasn't me."
