During the Iron age the best instruments were made of steel, which was hard to produce. Most items were forged from wrought iron, which although not as strong as bronze, is plentiful and easy to work with.
In historical strategies, generally the Iron age is when swordsmen and legions are available for construction, which are generally units that are biased towards attack as opposed to defence. Most often the Iron age is brought with the discovery of Iron Working and will last until the invention of Gun Powder.
