Gameplay
Players control a square, moving around the map while shooting opponents and avoiding being shot. INVERSUS offers two modes of gameplay: Arcade and Versus.
Arcade Mode
In this mode, a single player, or a team of two players, fight off waves of enemies spawning all around them. There are seven different maps of varying size and shape to choose from. Some of these maps wrap around the screen, letting players travel off the left edge to arrive at the right edge and so forth. This can cause players to see characters displayed multiple times.
Versus Mode
Players fight to the death in either a one-on-one or two-on-two fashion. These matches can be played locally or online. Players may queue up for online games alone or with one additional local player. While waiting in the matchmaking lobby, players may start a local game. If the player is in a local game when a match starts, the local game is paused and the players is taken immediately back to the lobby. The local game may be resumed from the lobby.
Lobby leaders of private games have the options to change how many points are needed to win a round, the maximum number of bullets the ships have, up to six, and the powerup configuration, leaving them at the default, removing them entirely, or setting them to a random mix.
Enemies
This game features a small variety of enemies that become progressively more difficult in Arcade mode. The most basic classification of these enemies is by color: red and white. White enemies can only move on black spaces whereas red enemies can move on either black or white spaces. The basic white enemy always has a long-range attack whereas red enemies only gain this ability in higher-difficulty waves. If a red enemy does not have a projectile attack, it moves around the map turning some of the blocks around it black. Projectiles from enemies also turn white spaces black.
Powerups
- Smash - Temporarily turns the player's ship into a red ship
- Red bullet - Gives the player one to three red bullets
- Shield - Gives the player a temporary shield
Unlocks
There are 45 color palettes and over 250 emotes currently available.
Color palettes cycle at random through all enabled options. Players assign four emotes that can be used at the end of a versus mode round.
Players unlock color palettes and emotes after the completion of some games. When a players increases either their arcade or versus level, they are guaranteed an unlock but there is a chance of an unlock after each completed match.
Leaderboards
Players can compete to reach the top of various leaderboards, which are mostly available in-game. Statistics recorded on these leaderboards are players' Versus Level, Arcade Level, number of public multiplayer matches won, and the high scores for all arcade maps for solo and for cooperative play. The games won leaderboard will soon be replaced by a rank points leaderboard in at least the PC version of the game. The rank points leaderboard is currently available only through Steam.
