    Find Your Light 0

Since the launch of Braid back in 2008, there’s usually been at least one independently developed game each year that reaches the upper echelons of “unforgettable.” I’d argue that 2015’s showcases were Her Story and Ori and the Blind Forest, which were expertly crafted experiences and some of the best titles to come out of last year. This year, we may have an early adopter to that crown with the rise of Hyper Light Drifter; a game that relies as much on its world&r...

    Better than Hard Zelda 0

Hyper Light Drifter is a game that looked cool on Kickstarter, but I passed on backing it. Then it came out and it still looked cool, but I'd read a lot of comparisons to Zelda and notes on high difficulty, so I passed. Zelda's not a series I have a lot of love for, and I'm not attracted to games that get a lot of buzz just for being difficult. However, when it got a lot of love during the Giant Bomb game of the year deliberations, I finally took it as a hint that it might be more than Hard Zeld...

    A beautiful mess of a game 0

The highlight of the game was easily the opening cinematicHyper Light Drifter is a game that seemed built for me. I'm a sucker for unique art styles. I adore the Dark Souls series. Games like Metroid and Zelda putting an emphasis on exploration are among my favorites. Unfortunately, I found this game to be a victim of a disjointed design ethos. Hyper Light Drifter attempts to take elements of a number of different games while still trying to be its own game, yet it doesn't seem to at any point f...

    Hyper Light Drifter Review 0

Hyper Light Drifter is a 2d action rpg game developed by Heart Machine in which you play as an unnamed character in a dystopian world. You spend your time exploring, fighting, and platforming through this forgotten world starting in a central town and going either north, south, east, or west, and all in a 16-bit art style. What makes this game stand out from the rest is that the creator of this game, Alex Preston, has a heart disease, which is a major source of inspiration for this game.Hyper Li...

    Hyper Light Drifter 0

Hyper Light Drifter feels like visiting a foreign country, where nothing makes sense, and you feel anxious exploring a place that is entirely alien to you. But after the first half hour, you realize that this foreign land isn’t exotic at all; there are grocery stores, restaurants, and parks, just like you’ve seen a thousand times before in your life. Everything is aesthetically unique and interesting, but the mystique disappears when you realize that women’s draped garb is jus...

    Hyper Light Drifter 0

Beautiful in its simplicity, yet complex and haunting in its atmosphere. This game looks and sounds fantastic, especially with the new 60 fps patch. It has extremely satisfying combat, a mysterious world, and provides one of the most natural senses of discovery I have ever seen in a game.As someone who usually grows annoyed and exhausted with adventure games which require a lot of exploring, I still never went and picked up a walkthrough. This is not to say exploring was easy, but discovery neve...

Fantastic combat, but all show, no tell 0

There hasn’t been a game I’ve played in recent memory that sets the stage so quickly. From the opening minutes of Hyper Light Drifter, I’ve witnessed a series of stylish, moody and cryptic sequences that had me absolutely hooked even before I had control. After the intro sequence it becomes fairly apparent that Hyper Light Drifter is heavily inspired by games like Dark Souls, Super Metroid and Zelda: A Link to the Past. The tight controls, numerous secrets to discover and tough...

Rarely has a game delivered so thoroughly on the promise of its reveal 0

When I saw the Kickstarter trailer for Hyper Light Drifter a few years back it felt like someone had reached in to my brain and put the contents in a blender. It evoked a very clear idea of what that game would be and as it turns out: they made exactly that game and it's brilliant. I've seen some claim that HLD lacks originality because it's upfront about its influences (Zelda, Journey, Fez, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind among other). But Heart Machine have synthesised them with incr...
