Honey first appeared in Sanman's portion of the opening of Fighting Vipers. This version of Honey would be used as her alternate palette in Sonic Championship.
Honey is based on the character of the same name from Fighting Vipers (renamed Candy for western releases), and was developed as a new character for Sonic Championship, like Bean and Bark. However, she retains some small graphical glitches, and the method to unlock her has been disabled, forcing players to hack the game to unlock her, as one would have to with the bosses and other unfinished characters.
Honey's code is completely disabled in Sonic Gems Collection, leaving only wisps of her data leftover. She is unplayable even with cheat devices or external hacks.
Other than a one-off cameo on the cover of Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comic, Honey has been unseen outside of fanworks until 2012, when an announced port of Sonic Championship for Xbox Live and PlayStation Network confirmed that not only would bosses Metal Sonic and Dr. Eggman be playable, but so would a fully functional Honey.
