So I have barely started playing this game and I have no idea what I'm doing. I've been flying around a bit and just doing random stuff. Should I stay in a sector until the army or rebels comes or just keep moving on? So I guess I'm just asking for basic advice and tips on the game.

    I always blame iPhone.

In the first two sectors (or in all, best way to maximize the amount of resources you get by the time you get to the last stand) I have found that it's best to hit all the way points you can, while using as few missiles as you can. From there it's just up to what ship your using and your play-style to decide what upgrades you want to get.

I tend to like to be able to take hits, so: Zolton ship, a dude in shields/engine room/pilot, upgrade the shields as soon as I can. Them from there work on the doors, weapons, hopefully pick up a drone or two.

Oh, if you haven't played the tutorial... you should do that. And pausing/space bar if your friend!

Happy traveling faster than light fellow duder!

Yeah, like @rynbeed said, do as much as you can in every sector before moving on. The more you do, the more you get, the better off you'll be for the final confrontation. And even then you're going to need a little Energon and a lot of luck to beat the final boss.

Yea I am. But fire usually kills my crew. I thought that I could just open up the doors so that it wouldn't have oxygen, but it was spreading to fast.

@SexyToad: Everyone else has already given you good tips, in terms of A) try to zig zag around each sector, only leaving the sector when the Rebel fleet is JUST about to reach the exit beacon, and B) play on easy while you're still learning, and C) try to conserve resources like missiles whenever you can get away with it.

The other tip I'll give because some new players have trouble fending off boarders: use your door system. They gave it to you for a reason. You can manually click on each door to open them, or you can click the buttons in the lower right of the screen to open/close all doors. If you're up against some really tough boarders, open your airlocks and the doors on most of your ship, forcing the oxygen out of those areas, causing the enemies to avoid those rooms because the vacuum is deadly. Using that method, try to force them to fight you in your medbay, where you have a distinct advantage. It's a pretty cheap strategy, but this game tries to rob you of victory at every turn, so fair's fair.

Also of note: fires need oxygen to burn. If there's a fire on your ship, it's often easier to open the airlocks and a path of doors to that fire, flushing the oxygen (and the fire) out into space. Only put fires out with your crew when you absolutely have to.

Aside from that, just mess around with different upgrades, different equipment, different strategies (as far as what enemy systems to target, what things to buy first), and just spend some time getting a feel for the game. Also, if you see a blue option, always take it, because it means you're getting a more advantageous option based on a certain crew member/upgrade/item your ship has.

Always leave your airlock open. That way, if you have boarders beam into that area, they're going to take about 10 damage before they get into the main ship with no door upgrades. If you DO have door upgrades, they will take 60 damage. If you have BOTH upgrades, they will straight up fucking die.

    25+ hours and I haven't.

    So, probably not.

I forgot that, someone else already said it but do easy mode first. I did 'normal' AKA hard mode for my first 15 hours and started to not have fun, once I started doing easy, or 'normal', mode I started getting ships and a better handle on the game.

If you haven't already, play the tutorial. It has been a long time since I've played a game where the tutorial has felt absolutely essential to even survive the actual game.

Just play the game a lot. Probably on easy. There's a lot of utter BS situations in Normal you'll run into that will just kill you instantly, or if you survive them your not making it much further. I know the game is supposed to be hard, but when the reasons why you lose are based on luck it sucks all the fun out of the game.

It was fun unlocking all the ships and layouts, after that an occasional game with a ship picked at random is alright. It's not going to become completely dull any time soon, though it doesn't have a tremendous amount of staying power either.

I mean no offense to anyone, but reading this thread reminded me why so many games these days are heavy-handed with the guidance. It's a miracle some people figure out how to play some games.

Ever played a rougelike before? You'll get a lot of bad to moderate luck on playthroughs where your skill keeps you going. Then you'll get a few amazing luck playthroughs where your skill decides if you win.
