[PREMIUM]

So lately, there have been a lot of videos tagged with [PREMIUM]. I can understand why Giant Bomb feels the need to diversify premium only content, and that's all well and good, but something about this seems super off-putting to me. I love that these videos exist and I would love to get a membership so that I could participate, but I feel that the way these videos are presented could be more elegant. In my opinion, adding "[PREMIUM]" to the title gives off this air of superiority, for a lack of a better word. When I see that I hear "Haha, there's a party and you're no invited, so suck it", which kind of bums me out. Dave said early on that the goal of the membership program was not to put everything behind a pay-wall, but I feel like this kind of flies in the face of that.

Would it be possible to have multiple news feeds, one without these special videos and one with? Perhaps you could add a special "special insider video access" clause to the membership page?

Its like its a porn site, "become a member to get access to PREMIUM hd videos".

It was only there because people were mad that they saw the video and it wasn't properly marked as subscriber only and they got stopped from watching it.

There's been other threads asking for like a tiny Ribbon on the thumbnails of the Premium videos though and that to me seems like a good idea.. A tiny little thing that would easily be overlooked and then a non-subscriber clicks on it and goes "FOR FUCKS SAKE! How was I supposed to know at first glance that this wasn't for non-subscribers?" and then millions of threads complaining about that would start too.

Yeah, many, many people complained that the Daggerfall video wasn't specially marked as a subscriber feature.

Agreed, its only to tell nonmembers what is sub only content.

I always thought there should be a gold/silver border around the videos that were subscriber-only. It's an easy, clean, eloquent way to solve that problem. I figured it would have been in the last update, but I suppose not.

Stop your whining. Either pay them, or get on with your life. You must have something better to do than watch Dave and Vinny play Daggerfall.

To be honest I agree. I think they should put those videos in a premium section or something, or just exchange the word premium for an icon. Being shown something that you can't access and others can, creates an unwanted amount of segregation.

I'm raising a concern because it affects me, so by Zipf's law, there must be someone who is very much affected by it.

I would love to get a membership, but I don't have a credit card, a source of income, nor the desperation to beg for money, so don't try and shame me that way.

We get threads of people complaining that they didn't know content was premium. We get threads of people complaining that there's a tag. Someone write me a greasemonkey script that blocks whiners.

That seems like a good solution. I have no problem with using the "premium" label, but it just looks kind of unclean right now.

Someone will complain about "gold trim" on videos or "insider access" or weird icons....

@chrismafuchris: They only put that up there cause people were bitching that they saw a premium vid (unmarked), would click it, and couldn't play it. Then they put that here and you're bitching because of a title? They call them premium memberships so it's premium content, and they have also said they're going to start doing that stuff on the daily. Why the hell are you bitching about a word? Does it really change what it is that much? No air of superiority there, "Premium" is just a descriptor of what it is- content for premium members.

You wanna know somthing. It was [SUBCRIBER] befor....people complained.......so now its [PREMIUM] people complained...so now it will become [Chicken] and then people will complain that stops them from watching the videos then it will becomes [HIPOTTYIHOPMITUS] then people will be insulted because that nows reminds them they arnt subcribers and cant watch the video.

You see a pattern? Its not the word its, what it signs posts thats the problem. So everyone sign up or not and just deal with it. I subbed cos i couldnt deal with not getting to see everything. I dont havea job and live with family but £4/$5 a month I can fork out to make between jobs a little more berable. If you wont pay that then your choice. if you cant pay that then sorry, if payment methods screw you up as some people have been sorry again.

People will still not be happy. I am all for cushioning the pain for them, except people will always be unhappy. It all just mean they cant watch and thats the main problem they have.

@chrismafuchris: They are adding neat things that people have been asking for, and keeping all the great core experience for everyone. Stop fucking bitching. A) They have to tell you which content is which, and B) it's a temp solution until they figure out a more attractive way to do it. If it's something you want to see, then subscribe., if not, too bad. They will put things behind a pay wall, just not the core experience. Kinda tired of this crap. They just give you content, you pay nothing for the great content they give you. It can be irritating when I see what I'm not getting, but it doesn't affect me that much. At least, not enough to make a topic about it.

I'm just going to say, I'm pretty sure words like MEMBER or SUBSCRIBER would trigger the same reaction aswell. Also these features aren't anything old - it's not like they're paywalling mailbags now.

Actually, now that I think about it. With all the threads complaining and whining about this (not that this is whining at all, the others that are) they should just go all out and use this picture instead of the "[PREMIUM}" tag:

I'm pretty sure I heard that the [PREMIUM] text is only temporary until they make something better to signify it. Completely hiding it from non-subscriber is dumb. No one will want something that they don't know it exists.

What's the point? That the label [PREMIUM] gives off too much of an air of superiority or that its not subtle enough?

Hiding premium archived content makes free users go "hurr $4 a month is a waste, no premium content" while the rest of us waddle in hours of delicious unique content every day. Ain't gonna happen.

Yep, people seeing that the content exists and not having access is the issue, not really the method in which it's displayed. But then again the OP was only complaining about the way it was displayed so my comment was kind of wrong

oh well! I kind of like the idea of just putting a giant picture of Luchadeer on the picture if it's a subscriber video.

@SomeJerk: Did I ever once say that I'm mad that I can't watch the videos? No, I find it terrific that there's stuff that I can't watch! The more content the better, as far as I'm concerned.
