@chamurai: I don't blame you on this one. I've played these games so I recognized a texture, but what's up with ALL the screenshots except 6 being super zoomed in? Usually the shots get easier as they go but 1 and 4 are basically the same except a little more UI in 4 and 5 is harder than either.
I always imagined this series was a more succesful Hydro Thunder. So imagine my surprise when I typed Jet Moto and didn't even get the franchise right. After that I THOUGHT about typing the correct franchise but I was so in the midset that a game called Wipeout HAD to be a water based racing game that I instead thought it wise to type Gran Turismo 2(HA!) and Extreme-G(An N64 exclusive that I forgot I owned).
So, yeah, not my best outing.
But yeah, you're right, the middle screenshots are all real close up until the last one.
@chamurai: I'm...baffled by this. Not trying to be a jerk because we all have our blindspots but for a #prodigiousguesser like yourself this is kind of a big one. I guess I'm older than you because this series was a HUGE deal when it came out and even though I wasn't a big fan it was on so many demo discs etc... that it was unmissable. Then there were multiple more modern releases and updates and remakes etc...
And the series it is most frequently compared to is F-Zero! Everyone pairs those two when talking about games in this subgenre!
This to me is kind of like saying "I didn't guess Soul Calibur because I always thought that series was like Virtua Fighter and didn't have any weapons."
Again, we all have our blind spots and this stands out to me more because I was around at the time, but I am still surprised!
@bigsocrates: Every sentence felt like a fresh dagger to the heart. Alas, I have no excuses. What's worse is if I had guessed this one correctly, I would have ascended to the next rank but now it'll just feel hollow when I do make it.
More seriously, if you have not played Journey you should definitely play that, even instead of 623. It even incorporates some of the best ideas from that game. But I would say that's a mega acclaimed game that lives up to its hype, and my understanding is that there are still people online with it even today (though that's not necessary to have a great time.)
It's one of those games that I think everyone has on their "I should play that sometime" list, but it's short and great and deserves to be off that list. Unless you've already played it, in which case why did I type all this? PLAY BALAN WONDERWORLD!
@bigsocrates: I have not played either of the games. Strange, I know, since people were really singing its praises. I'll check it out this year.
In hindsight, I'm wondering why I didn't try it before. I played Telltale's The Walking Dead because GB was so hyped up about it but I didn't do the same for the others.
This brings me back to some of the golden years of this website when it was starting to fire on all cylinders, and this game was all the hype among the staff.
@chamurai: My guess is that the Metacritic score for this game is based on re-releases and involves people reviewing re-releases based on current standards or the quality of the re-release and not the game itself. The game itself is a classic and a watermark for the genre.
That being said the game is very accessible today so you can play it with whoever, but I also don't think it has aged all that well.
