is it allowed to copy wikipedia content to giant bomb or do you aim for 'original' content?

I think you should try to come up with more original stuff if you know what i mean.

I'd definitely say it should be soley original content - otherwise it'll just end up like every other site that copies from Wikipedia.
Perhaps quotes from Wikipedia could be allowed - as long as they are sourced, and lists could be used (after being reformatted and error-checked).

Yeah, original content is favored but I guess if you need to copy from wikipedia, then you can do so. Wikipedia doesn't have many copyright things so it should be fine

The classy way would be to state that at least a section of your article is ripped off of Wikipedia

Wikipedia's section on it's Copyrights states:
"Wikipedia content can be copied, modified, and redistributed so long as the new version grants the same freedoms to others and acknowledges the authors of the Wikipedia article used (a direct link back to the article is generally thought to satisfy the attribution requirement)."

The problem here is that Giant Bomb obviously aims to be a professional site, competing with all the large companies. If they allow the 'same freedoms' to content published on the site (as would be required to use Wikipedia content) - then this content could be copied.

Besides, to maintain a level of professionalism - even in a site where users can contribute so freely - content should be original. A link to a Wikipedia article on the game/character wouldn't go amiss, but copying content is a bit too much in my opinion.

This is exactlky what I was thinming about as it would be so easy to lift and insert a wiki article for a game. I agree that it should be  new and original content otherwise there would be no point to come to this website.

I raised another copyright issue (for boxart images) in this thread - I'd rather not bump it, but if anyone has any knowledge in regards to copyright in this area, I think this matter needs to be cleared up.

If anything, copy from Wikipedia's sources instead of Wiki itself.

i think, that would be an even bigger problem.
the content on wikipedia itself is under no copyright. the content that wiki cites as sources and that it is based on is (most of the time) copyrighted.

This is why I don't try to edit any kind of Wiki, because when you get into all that citation shit it feels to much like I'm back at college.

I thought of it as similar to going to say IGN.com or Gamespot.com and saving their screenshots and then uploading them here, with the Gamespot and IGN watermarks on the screenshot, it will make GiantBomb look very cheap I think, just write up whatever you can; it is moderated until you hit 1,000 Wikipoints and even then, someone else can come in and re-write your piece if they think they can improve it.

Copying from Wikipedia = no. Using Wikipedia as a source and changing the words to make it original = yes. At least in my opinion anyway.

lol. I like that anti-plagiarism is a tip, and not a rule.

It's like, "we don't encourage lawsuits, but if you feel you need to give us one then that's fair enough"

I thought the whole point was for people to submit info that they created not just copy and pasting stuff from wikipedia

I didn't notice that - great, at least that's been sorted!
It will be so much better if the content on Giant Bomb is entirely original!
I've added this question and a short answer to my FAQ.
