Poll 4K or 1080p - Which resolution you're currently using right now? (No matter if it's the console or PC gaming) (316 votes)

4K (4096 × 2160) 41%
1080p (1920 x 1080) 59%

Hello

The current resolution I'm using right now is 1080p for PC and console gaming because I couldn't afford a 4K TV and monitor at that moment, even if I buy a PS5 in the near future, I will still use my 1080p TV and monitor.

I got a 4K HDR tv a couple of years ago but am on a 1440p monitor for playing on PC.

I'm ok having a lower res, smaller (~20 inch) monitor for playing on PC, it means I have to spend less on graphics cards. I'll probably keep it until HDR monitors become more widespread and affordable, then I might upgrade in size and to a G/V sync monitor too.

It's a bit of an oversight to not include 1440p, as that's currently the sweet spot if you have semi decent pc and still appreciate higher framerates.

That said, I'm still on 1080p. Though I'm in the market for a 1440p monitor.... probably once I get my tax returns.

Using my PS5 with a 4K/60 monitor. The monitor was also advertised as HDR, but I discovered later that it doesn't have enough brightness to make the HDR look good. Oh well.

I also have a 4K laptop and a 4K cellphone, but I'm not using them for high-end gaming.

4K on both my PC and Console. Though on PC, I sometimes have to turn the settings down to 1440p or 1080p because my graphics card isn't powerful enough to run most modern games at 4K.

If it makes you feel better, 4K is only really benefits when you have a large screen television or monitor. If your screen is 40 inches or less, then 1080p is fine.

My tv is 1080 and the monitor I connect my laptop to is less than that lol. I just got a next gen console so it's making me actually finally think about a 4k/HDR tv but there is literally nothing wrong with my current TV so I'm thinking sometime next year?

Still using a 1080 60 monitor, i don't have a lot of space and 1080 still looks great to me.
I'm sure my world would change forever if i ever saw a 4k image or refresh rates higher than 60, but i want to remain ignorant for as long as possible, i don't currently feel like i'm missing anything and enjoy the benefits to performance by being at a lower resolution, i also just think pushing that many pixels is kind of silly.

I am one of those weirdos who could upgrade to 1440p, but instead opted to get a 1080p Gsync-compatible 144hz monitor. I don't need a bigger monitor, and I am perfectly happy with 1080p. I also only play on PC, save for some Switch here and there. Haven't been interested in any of the other consoles since Xbox 360.

@jaqen_hghar: Honestly, 1440p is cool, but I definitely noticed the biggest difference in the jump from 60hz to 144hz with freesync/gsync. It really is a drastic improvement in how smooth gameplay can be.

4K, but more realistically, anything that'll give me 60FPS. The golden option are games that let you set the resolution and the render scale separately. I just hate having a game that only run at 60fps on 1080p, then having to alt+tab for whatever reason and having all my monitors freak out and mess my other windows while it get back into my desktop's 4K.

1440p/165hz

That's also not the right 4K resolution; TVs and monitors are predominantly 3840 x 2160 when they are referred to as 4K. You listed 'true 4K,' which is usually used in cameras or movie theaters.

4096x2160 is a production standard, but essentially all 4K media (including game consoles) operates at the 16:9 resolution of 3840x2160.

Anyway, I use a 4K 120Hz screen for PC and consoles.

Also, the lack of 1440p make the results of the poll completely meaningless.

I'm still using a 1080p monitor on my PC and have no plans to upgrade in the near future. I play at a desk and my own personal view when building a new gaming PC(which i'm overdue for now) is more of just essentially building the longest lasting console equivalent rather than something to run everything at the highest settings. If I can go 5 or 6 years before having to start turning specs down to high/medium I consider it a win.

Throw me in with the 1440p crowd. And 165Hz! God, there's nothing like the buttery smoothness of a game that looks good and runs smoothly at 100+ FPS. Would not trade that for 4K any day of the week.

I have a TV in my office with several 1080p consoles plugged into it and a 4K TV in my living with my PS4 and Xbox One plugged into it. The Xbox One S gets used a lot as a media center - movies, Youtube, that sort of thing - but the rest of the consoles don't get used much anymore. Partly because of time constraints and partly because my eyes have become so used to that sweet, sweet sixty plus frames per second that going back to thirty takes some getting used to.

Think I’ll be sticking to 1080p for a good long time. I think it looks great and I’d value framerate over a higher resolution.

I bought a 4k monitor and it is fine. Was kind of a budget 4k monitor so it’s not blowing me away. Would probably help if it supported HDR, but it does not. That being said, when I go back to 1080p things look very very blurry to me now... so that sucks.

1440p @144hz, personally just finds this the sweet spot. This is on a 27" inch monitor. I find 20180p at this scale grimy and ugly and for 4K it makes no sense.

Also have a LG CX 4K TV, but never game on it. Sacrificing frames and image quality to get the higher resolution is just not a thing i want to do.

I have a 4k tv with no HDR.

I also have a 1080/144Hz 27" Qled monitor that I barely really know how to use/adjust for gaming.

I game on my tv, but would really like to switch my 2 Pc's around, because for some reason I am not educated enough to understand, I really like how things look on the monitor.

4k tv on pc, but i've never really been able to play games at true 4k. Had it since I got my gtx1080 (which was the first "4k" card at the time, wish I held out for the 1080ti)

4K for my regular TV's with a PS5 attached but I will always opt for lower resolution gaming if it means 60fps or more. For PC gaming I'm back to 1440p after getting a 240hz monitor that is unreal. Higher FPS >>>>>>

1080p for me at 120-240Hz; I definitely prefer smoothness over resolution. Heck I still play N64 at 240p so I think I can handle it.

4K on the TV where I do most of my gaming right now and 1080p on my PC screen. I'm looking forward to upgrading to a 1440p or 4K PC monitor sometime later this year.

Until I can get 4k @ 120hz in every game, I am staying at 1080p.

I am on PC and Xbox Series X.

I use a 1440p monitor, but sometimes dial it down to 1080p if my 580 cant handle it. I prefer frame rate over resolutions any day.

I have a 4k TV but no console that outputs 4k. Just a base PS4 atm.

3440x1440@120Hz. From the comments I wonder if 1440p wouldn't win a poll with all 3 options.

It's the sweet spot. And playing stuff in 4k on my OLED I don't feel like I'm really missing out (PS5 and some PC titles, e.g. Control with RT).

2160 @60fps though since my TV was just an emergency replacement for an old 1080 that died and I got what was on sale it doesn't actually have HDR which kinda sucks but also replacing it feels unnecessary even though I have a Series X now.
