So ... I'm really bad when it comes to be creative and building stuff. I need some inspiration. Show me what you guys build in your settelments, I'm really curious to see what the GB community came up with :)
Fallout 4
Game » consists of 14 releases. Released Nov 10, 2015
The Fallout series continues in a post-apocalyptic Boston, Massachusetts.
Show me your buildings!
I turned the cul-de-sac bit of Sanctuary into a shopping mall, which created a bit of a bug - All the residents hang around it constantly, probably smoking and getting into trouble. Bloody teenagers...
@dave_tacitus: I see you also created a basketball court :)
@2headedninja: Just the one hoop unfortunately. I'm no Austin Walker. ;)
Not on my gaming PC right now so will post later - I've renovated my old house a bit and generally tidied up everywhere else and given them beds and generators. Not bothered putting up many walls and fences yet though.
@dave_tacitus: Its because of the food/drink cart/stand. It happens to me also. All of them go to it every night after they finish "working", but only three of them actually eat and or drink. The others just stand around like zombies until midnight. At which point everyone goes to bed.
@sterling: Bethesda, never change...
Is there a distinct lack of walls with windows in the workshop, or is it just me? Full walls, half walls, no walls - but no normal windows. They don't even need to have glass in them, just the opening would be fine.
I built a bar in Sanctuary, but it looks really strange without any windows. That's when I decided to build an outdoor bazaar for the shops instead of another full on building.
I don't have any pictures. I don't think what I've built so far is all that impressive to be honest.
@bane: Yep. I built a watchtower that's really more of a monolith with a chair on top of it than anything. It looks weird. That said, as I progress I'm getting a better handle on these mechanics, and things are looking better. I'm spending as much time building and tweaking than I am scavenging, which just means I'm almost always short on supplies. Sanctuary's 'happiness' is really high though.
Haven't decorated it yet and I also built a crows nest type thing going around the Red Rocket statue but haven't finished building it.
@fatalbanana: Huh.....so I just put a hangar like house ontop of the place, build a slightly....mostly hovering extension to the back and....a shed for Power armour near the coolant pumps......yours kinds looks more ....housey.

Yeah, I think connecting it to the the garage sells it more as a house. I want to add some verticality to it and build more off the roof to add a more tactical feel to it. I wish there was a good way to light up the sign above the garage but I cant make it work with the way lights function.
@fetchfox: Great work on the tower! I keep trying to make a good looking crows nest type thing but can never make it look right. I really wish you were able to build ladders, setting up connected stairs always looks a little clunky.
Is it possible to make interior walls? It appears that once two floor pieces are snapped together you can't place a wall on their shared edge.
@asilentprotagonist Where did you get those lights? I don't have anything like that in my workshop.
@fatalbanana: Thanks! It's starting to look good. I like what you've done with red rocket as well, looks cozy.
@mikemcn: In addition to just being neat, there will be DLC for this game, so you will potentially come back to the game over and over, and having even more of an established character and place makes it all the more tempting to go back in.
@mikemcn: The biggest part that has been missing from any Bethesda game for me has been the ability to build my own home wherever I want in the world without relying on fixed pre-designed locations that don't mean anything to me. This still has fixed locations but it at least gives the freedom to build something unique.
I was kind of iffy on the building/decorating element until I had the inspiration to put all my settlers' "beds" (shitty mattresses on the floor) all into one big shed with a sign that says "Tools" posted by the door.
Take that, dorks!
*edit: You folks aren't the dorks, the tools that I've got running my water purifiers are the dorks*
@honkalot: How did you make your way up on the roof? Been doing the same myself, but it just doesn't look good. Ended up having the actual building floating above the roof, which looks really bad. So would be neat to see how you did it!
I discovered the joy of building very late in my last playthrough, but on the second one I'm starting soon, I'm going to be building all the way through. This thread is good inspiration.
There are a lot of neat ideas in here. I'm definitely going start building stuff on top now. Also, anyone managed to make the house in Diamond City to look decent?
@choi: Can I like hire you or something to re-build Sanctuary for me? I really like what you've done with it.
@wrecks: Nice. Reminds me a bit of Fallingwater.
Man, this is giving me so many ideas. I totally never thought of connecting my home to another one or even expanding over the cement foundation already there.

Awww, thanks man! I have a ton of other ideas for Sanctuary and for pimpin' out other settlement locations but I'm building so much I'm always short on resources.
I posted this in another thread but I suppose I should repost here.
It's my power armor garage/showcase thingamajig. I've made some slight tweaks since, but I'm just too lazy to take a new screenshot (It still looks largely the same)
Some of your creations are blowing my mind and giving me major inspirations though lol. I both love and hate the crafting. Love the fact you CAN make some cool things, hate that stuff always ends up floating and FUCK THE BUSHES.
@wrecks: Nice. Reminds me a bit of Fallingwater.
Yep definitely getting some strong modernism vibes. Nice work!

I really really really like this one :)
Taking my time building my post-apoc dream home.
This is really nice. I built something similar, just not as nice. I ran into a problem where I found out that I couldn't put in a doorway so now it's just an open air home.
@jaqen_hghar: On the rear of the building I made a house with a full staircase onto a second floor, then from the second floor I tried to get a half-stair as close as possible to the red rocket building itself. Then I started with small floor squares on top of the roof itself, not actually connected to the stair down because I could only get the stair within maybe 5-10 inches of the roof.
Using the small floor squares I was able to plop down one in pretty much perfect height of the edge of the roof. So that it was aligned in height with the metal trim going around the roof. Then I just build off of that floor square! :)
It's technically floating over the roof, but in line with the metal trim. It's not noticeable because I decked it out with wooden floor all around my house and then it aligns pretty well with when the slanted roof starts shooting up.
@honkalot: Thanks! Will have to see if I can do that. Just haven't been able to find a spot where I can place one of the stairs close enough. I didn't really use the small floor squares back then though.
Now I just have a problem with wood and steel... Need a lot more of that.
Modifying the Starlight Drive In and having a lot more fun than anticipated doing so. Just got into power and wiring and even having fun setting that all up.
Added onto the collapsed part of the drive in mainly with a living area so far. I like playing off of the structure that is already there.
Also using a bit of the screen area of that settlement on the base level but haven't figured out how to build on top of it yet. I would like to make a penthouse at the top.
I have a farm area near the screen and a water purifier at the water hole in the center.
EDIT: Almost forgot to mention I did use a mod that basically doubles the output of power generators. They are too weak I felt.
The Sims: Fallout, I guess.
It seriously does give me those vibes. I did enjoy building interesting houses in the Sims.
I seem to have developed an unfortunate fetish for fencing up my settlements all the way around the outer perimeter.
Sadly the actual wood fences for this purpose are A. too high triangle count - so they waste your allotted assets fast B. don't snap together and leave big gaps; so I had to use metal walls ... that's a LOT of steel.
