A visual novel from Nintendo and Squaresoft featuring real teen idol Miho Nakayama. Released in 1987, it is considered one of the first true dating sims.
Known outside of Japan as "Takeshi's Challenge", this game is an unconventional action-adventure platformer created by famous Japanese comedian Beat Takeshi. Along with its open world exploration and mature themes, the game is known for its unorthodox game progression (where the game can easily be made unwinnable).
This adventure game has the player searching ancient Mayan temples for a lost professor and his team.
The sequel to Tower of Druaga and an asynchronous two-player action-RPG. After rescuing Ki at the end of the first game, Gilgamesh and Ki must escape the Tower of Druaga by descending through its floors.
The Wizard of Oz is a graphical and textual adventure game based on the classic novel.
A sidescrolling action game by Taito, released to arcades in 1985. Unusual in that the player character was female.
An adventure game written and designed by Yuji Horii, developed by Login Software and published by ASCII in 1984.
Released in 1984 by Sega, this was the debut work by Sonic creator Yuji Naka. It featured an early female protagonist, and elements of action, adventure, and dating sims.
An early Japanese RPG released by Hot-B in 1984 that departed from the fantasy themes of most other early RPGs in favour of what is possibly gaming's first sci-fi cyberpunk plot. Set in a post-apocalyptic city, the game revolves around an amnesiac protagonist with psychic powers.
An adventure game released in 1984. It was Squaresoft's first game.
Players climb the tower, defeat Druaga and rescue Princess Ki in this maze-style, action role-playing game. Originally released by Namco for arcades in 1984, its combination of hack & slash combat and RPG elements laid the foundations for the action RPG genre.
Emmy: The Funny Game is an early eroge where the player is challenged to persuade the titular girl strip off her clothes.
Eroge Pac-man clone developed by G.T. Enterprise Inc. in 1983.
Adult adventure game created by Enix in 1983.
One of Koei's first games, Danchi Tsuma no Yuwaku (団地妻の誘惑, "Housewife Temptation") was an early adventure RPG with adult content and dating sim elements.
1979 arcade shooter by Nintendo where the player must fight sixteen surrounding desperadoes. A precursor to Donkey Kong, it was designed by Genyo Takeda, with assistance from Shigeru Miyamoto, working on his first video game. Possibly the first run & gun shooter, it also introduced the damsel-in-distress trope to gaming as well as continuous background music.
A card-based dungeon crawler in which the enemies are female monsters. Once defeated several times or summoned, any monster can be chosen as a combat partner, leveling up and gaining new abilities.
