I've always been a huge sucker for games with good character creation. and I love games that let you make an entire party or crew like xcom. anyone got any suggestions for games like that? preferably something on steam. i also have a ps3. i would settle for something where you just name your dudes and pick their class too. but i would like something where you can customize them all.

I think Icewind Dale II is by far the best as far as this goes. It is much more expansive as far as customization than FFT and you have no forced characters. You make all 6 of your party members from scratch and develop them how you see fit.

You have a few party characters and then you get your own as well. I don't think it fits your description that well but it's a great game. I just think it's pretty limited comparatively.

This is also a good one in a similar vein to IWD II.

Neverwinter Nights 2's Storm Of Zehir expansion let's you make a party of 4 from scratch (6 if you fiddle around with some stuff).

    Legend of Grimrock is alright.

Yeah, Legend of Grimrock has what you're asking for. The caveat is that the story in that game is completely passive (you keep having plot-relevant visions while you sleep, also you find a very small amount of text logs that slightly elaborate on the setting/story), and there are no living NPCs in the world for your party to talk to. Your party exists only as a means to combat (which I guess is true of XCOM as well). However, yes, you customize your party from the start: you can name them, and decide what race they all are, what their unique traits are, and their appearance (from a series of preset portraits). It's a very oldschool, sorta D&D-inspired RPG, if you're up for it, @Terrents.

It's not on either PC or the PS3, but Dragon Quest IX allows you to create your entire party. It's a really fun game although being able to make everyone in your group comes at the sacrifice of having all the party members have their own lines of text-dialogue and unique personalities.

@Terrents: Final Fantasy Uno. FFT you can build your own party if you want but chances are Thunder God Cid will show up and murder everything. Also you'll restart at Velius, doh!

I decided on this. looks like what i wanted. thanks guys

    Hope you enjoy it.

Do look online though for guides on the game because the community through mods has made it a much better game than it is out of the box. I'm sure you can find some modding guides that will make the experience as good as it can be.

I'll second Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls is a downloadable title on PSN that I really enjoyed. It's not nearly as hardcore as the older games but the general gameplay and concepts are similar.

    haha yep sounds like DnD

I was replaying some Baldur's Gate II and it's hilarious that realistically it takes me like 2 weeks to get out of that first dungeon. Low level DnD is a bitch.

The Disgaea games lets you customize your party a loooooooot. But don't play them unless you enjoy grinding at least a little bit. Because you would end up doing a lot of it.
