geez enough already. but if it is treyarch making it then that means it will probably have zombies, and a call of duty game that includes zombies makes it... you know. good. thats the only reason i bought black ops anyway
Call of Duty
Originally starting as a World War II-themed first-person shooter, the Call of Duty franchise now incorporates other time periods and conflicts and can be found on virtually every modern platform.
Hey, Guys! There’s Another Call of Duty Coming, Too

And I'm still reeling from that Assassin's Creed announcement.
I find I'm reacting to both pretty much the same. I'm tired of annual COD. I enjoy the multiplayer, but there's no need for that to be released so often. Likewise, I don't need Assassin's Creed every year. I know we're all supposed to be excited about it and it's a genuinely great game, but I can count on one hand how many games I need to experience every damn year.

ugh this is disgusting. i hate that these games get made. and those stupid bros and jocks play them AARRGGGHHH why can't the world just embrace GOOD games, i'm so fucking mad right now i'm going to explode, time for some anime and final fantasy to calm my nerves i'm so alone
I see what you did, there.

Activision ... just stop. Please. Better yet, everyone who repeatedly buys these, please stop so they move on to something new.
COD is the cash cow that allows them to move on to other new things, without being too afraid of the risk that comes with those new things, because this cash cow helps mitigate the impact of failures.

You guys notice how Klepek has started trying to write sassy headlines like Alex does, except he's not funny like Alex is?
Alex is funny?
Quite so. He's also the best writer on the site who generally doesn't post half-baked news stories for the sake of fanning flames or pandering to the lowest common denominator. I was about to comment on the amount of stupid whinging going on in here, and then realised that this is exactly what it was designed for. Cool journalismz.
completely agree.
You guys are pulling my leg, right? The most "journalistic" things I've seen him do are "sexism in games" and "religion in games", which is only the mainstay of every "look at me, I'm a real journalist" writer at every game site and gets trumped out at least monthly as fodder you can count on producing views and comments (because we never do enough navel-gazing).
I dig Patrick and all, but let's not be delusional about what he has brought to the table. Yeah, he has done more than just forward on press releases, but not a fuck of a lot more.
I think we are all on the same side

God, I hope it doesn't sell 9 million copies in a single fucking day. That is so pathetic; that would mean that there are just far too many gamers out there who are fucking stupid, and don't play original games at all. They only play stuff that is up to 2, 3, 4 or beyond that literally everyone has been talking about for years. The most mainstream of the mainstream. Which means it's hurting so many other studios, with much better ideas and more fun/memorable games... and that's never funny.
Right, because people only play one game. Ever. Because I bought two copies of MW3 today (one for myself and one for someone else), it means I'm not also playing and finishing several other games every month and don't buy around fifty or more games per year, ranging from Civilization to Red Orchestra to Shadows of the Damned to Frozen Synapse to Heavy Rain to Mass Effect to Sykyrim and everything in-between and beyond.
You know what else sucks? The Beatles. They're just too popular and people who like them only like popular music. They're too dumb and simple to like good stuff like the bands you and I like, which nobody else has never heard of, because they're totally obscure (but when they're no longer obscure, we'll start to hate them, too, because we're totally edgy like that!).
COD games are a fun ride (though less fun some years than others) ride with a pretty solid and enjoyable multiplayer that you can get into without letting your brain dribble through your nose. It's perfectly okay to take a break from other games and have a mindless blast, if you like. Even if it does cut into your Braid fan-fic writing time.
Also, let's get over the idea that because one game is popular it's hurting all the other games. Music isn't dead, because there are some globally renowned bands that get shitloads of marketing and promotion. Good movies aren't dead, just because there's "Meet the Spartans" and twenty-two Harry Potter films. It isn't a finite resource. And, in fact, there's a good argument to be made that the cash-cow generates so much revenue that it makes other games possible that they might not have bothered to make. Or otherwise brings interest into the industry and potential franchises that wouldn't be there if not for this. Again, like movies, a lot of them fail miserably and you count on your few massive block-busters to compensate for the missteps (in revenue generating films; not quality of the film, since that isn't always tied together).
Now, don't take all of the above as me condoning these ridiculous Madden-style annual releases. That shit has to stop at some point, when you're no longer making significant changes from one year to the next.
I agree with the first guy.
Congratulations! You have an opinion!

The assassins creed announcment really didnt upset me as much as another call of duty. I LOVE story based epics in games. The same trite multiplayer in call of duty however gets old and the story isnt very great.
I really dig the Assassin's Creed games, but the story in that franchise is only minimally better than the absurd story in every COD title. I think the dirth of meaningful story in gaming as a general rule unfortunately exaggerates our response to those few games that have any at all. Same goes for Mass Effect, while we're at it. Stories that we praise in games, but if they were books - they'd be in the laughed-at section of cheap pulp at the back of the bookstore and if they were a TV show would be the syndicated stuff run by third-tier networks on a Saturday afternoon, when nobody is watching.
Except for MW3 . . . the story in MW3 really is fucking awful. I mean, awful for even the COD series. I just finished playing it and not only was it annoyingly always "at eleven", but it was "this dude made us all fight each other so we killed him". I guess I would compare this particular COD story to the quality I imagine goes into a WWF story arc.

Wait, what?
Aren't we all spewing pretentious derision at COD because it's just another poor iteration on something we're all tired of? Isn't that pretty much where Zombies are, right now? Even before Walking Dead turned to shit (read as: started its second season), I'm pretty sure just about as many people who hate COD because . . . they only play games that stimulate their intellect and prepare them for ascension to a higher state of being when they leave this realm of mortal losers . . . also hate the idea of yet another Zombie movie or book or game.
Frankly, I'd be good with setting aside about a dozen franchises/topics (including COD and Zombies) and saying that the industry has to cut their shit off for about three years and come back to us with some new stuff before we'll get excited again. If I have to see one more L4D clone or top-down dual stick zombie shoot-em-up . . .

let's not pretend we didn't expect this. They're gonna keep making these long after we're all dead. Modern Warfare IN SPACE, anyone?
Either Space or Da Hood.
Hey, guys! Here's another thing all of us pretentious "this isn't Limbo?!" elitists can be disgusted about!
Danny Bilson, SVP of core games at THQ, recently confirmed the existence of Saints Row 4, despite Saints Row: The Third still being a full week from release. During an interview on G4's X-Play Bilson said, "I already know what Saint's Row 4 is about, and it is wilder than this one. It's a good example of how you take what you have and you say, 'What can happen in the next?'"
Can't say anything that hasn't been said. Activision's all about milking it while the milking is good. They should at least have every other game try bold new ideas, and have the other one stick to what's proven - instead of having the same damn game every year.
This news just gives me a reason to skip the current installment, I mean, it's not like I'm not getting enough COD. Same for Assassins Creed.
@Branthog: I just called in to say that I agree with a bunch of your statements, and that I think this generation is becoming a "cash cow" product, where we won't see a lot of new and exciting stuff until the next console generation spurs new IP's again (not to say that there isn't still exciting stuff coming out now).

@scarace360: Hey, at least they aren't pulling a Square Enix and announcing it BEFORE releasing MW3... *grin*
Im gonna go and high jack a mw3 truck now.
You will be getting this very same engine for another two COD games, at the very least.
Hope the new one doesn't find itself completed in under four hours on first play-through, even with a lot of deaths and re-tries of missions.
BF3 SP suddenly looks better in all ways of gameplay. MW2 also.
I dont know why everyone always gets so riled up about this. I played MW2 for the first time last year, so I didn't play CODBLOPS and I won't be playing MW3. Problem solved gentlemen. Just because they release one every year doesn't mean you have to buy one every year. And it's not like GB spams articles about these games like other sites, so I could give two shits what Activision does to make money. There's too many interesting games I want to play coming out anyway.
Remember how awesome Call of Duty 4 was? That shit was awesome.
I choose to remember it for what it was, not what it's become.

Oh dude, imagine if they took the hood from San Andreas and just made it a DLC multiplayer map... and replaced all the character models with those from GTA. Amazing. Great shot.

well it better be future warfare because i'm honestly SICK of modern guns (frag grenades mostly) that we have seen in every fps for the last god damn 5 or 6 years. and the weird looking guns in the nazi zombie mode would be cool against "humans". don't you agree?
I don't know about Blops 2, but I have to bet that IW's next game will be in a different setting.
You know, with all this BF3 and MW3 coverage, you'd never know that Dodonpachi Resurrection got released last week.

People want what they want, and sales show people want..no, Need CoD every year. I can't seem to hate Activision for giving people what they want and making a LOT of money in the process.
Exactly. For every person that hates CoD, there's a thousand people out there who love the hell out of that game. Guess which one Activision could give a fuck about? They're a business first and foremost and they're doing their job exceptionally well so I say keep doing what you do. I may not agree with every decision, but I'll be damned if I said I could do a better job.
