Rumors have been swirling about Halo developer Bungie’s next project for some time, and one of the things we keep hearing is that it’s an MMO. A new rumor report from Kotaku lines up with this belief. According to their source, the project, which is being called “Destiny” (and alternately “Tiger") is an FPS MMO set in--what else--a sci-fi world. The source also says that the game will feature a brand new graphics engine, as well as advanced matchmaking tech. Unfortunately, other than citing a source in the know, Kotaku doesn’t back any of this up with specifics, so big grain of salt here.

However, Bungie has gone the extra mile to discredit another, and less game-related, part of the posting.

    No Caption Provided

== TEASER ==According to Kotaku, the source was terminated along with roughly 30 other contractors because of performance-related problems and budget concerns. In an update on its blog, Bungie calls this claim flat-out false, as the studio “has never been asked to lay off any employees or contract employees by our publisher, Activision-Blizzard, for any reason.” Bungie further says it hasn't suffered any sort of layoffs or group firings, just to clarify in case the previous statement didn't convince you.

Obviously, there's nothing confirmed about this rumor, but what do you think about the details? Does an FPS MMO sound good to you?

If this is real, it's the first MMO that I'm interested in at all.

That being said, I still have serious doubts about the viability of the structure. It's a harsh market, and I don't think any of the games in are all that good. I once tried WoW because a friend wanted me the play with him, and all of it seemed boring, tedious, and poorly produced. Maybe I'm too used to other games, but man, the popularity of MMOs is beyond me.

    Also, I don't think it's real.

I love Bungie, but I don't give my money to Activision.  I feel so conflicted, but if it's a good game I'll get it.

I don't know, it wouldn't surprise me.  They've put a lot of work into their network code so I expect anything they do next will make use of that in a pretty big way.  An FPS MMO does not sound fun to play though.  And what does an MMO even mean these days?  I've seen 8-player 100% instanced games called MMOs.  Hell Halo multiplayer could be an MMO by today's standards if they just wrapped it in a hub world with some shop vendors.

So, Matchmaking with no explanation makes me either think its just another lobby FPS "MMO" and not truly an open-world one. Why can't developers get wind of making a Good Planetside MMO with some interesting mechanics to make it fresh.

Sometimes I wonder if they are ever thinking outside the box instead of trying to copy WoW, Halo, and whatever other Generic crap they get their hands on.

Aw, Giant Bomb, you're better than Kotaku in the same way a delicious ice cream sundae is better than a space horse kicking you in the face with its electrified hooves. Why you gotta lower yourself to repeating a rumor that Kotaku themselves would never in a million years bother to vet?

MMO's are popular because they are as addictive as crack, and can be quite fun too.

nah not really, mmos are so meh... always squeezing money out of you... also isn't blizzard's future mmo rumoured to be an FPS MMO and isn't there a cell shaded 3rd person shooter mmo made by ex-blizzard employees in the works? all of these clashing together doesn't sound good.

Why the hell is everyone still trying to make MMO's? There's 1 that is super popular, a handful that have a decent following, and then every other one that no one cares about a month after launch. No one can do them properly, it seems, but EVERYONE is still trying.

Why not, I mean a console FPSMMO sounds like a thing that should happen sooner or later and be huge right?  Maybe this and Titan are the same thing.

They have Bungie's FPS pedigree and Blizzard's MMO knowledge on hand, they have virtually unlimited cash reserves to make this happen, they have a pressing need for The Next Big Thing, they have Kotick's desire to squeeze more money out of FPS on console and they have the leverage to get the platform operators to play ball on their end.

I don't know if it's true or not, but if there is another WoW-sized cash-cow left in the market still to be found then it's gonna involve getting a subscription out of console gamers for an FPS.  Nobody is ever gonna be better placed to do that than Activision are right now.

Borderlands was an MMOFPS, a Minute multi-player first person shooter, yeah you read that right.
If they made it similar to that but made it possible to have tonnes of people playing it as well I could possibly get behind this. :-)

Could you imagine the first person mayhem of going into battle with 20 other players hunting down an extremely huge monster, some guys healing, some guys laying mines and luring the monster and the others shooting at sensitive areas etc, etc...

Much better than a third person MMO, plus the graphics would be able to much better too, hopefully.

Maybe my imagination did run away with me.

I hope this's cracked upto my imagination Bungie, I'd love you if it was. :-/

Will Microsoft finally get an MMO to balance the popularity of PS3's new DC Universe Online?  Microsoft has a very bad history with MMO's on their system.  A lot of games have been announced and later axed by the company.  I'm not saying that will happen here, after all it's Bungie, but I'll believe when it's on store shelves and not before.   One thing I noticed was the "advanced matchmaking" aspect.  That makes me think a lot of it is going to be instanced and I don't like heavily instanced MMOs since they don't allow for a sense of community.   If it's a big open world and only the skirmishes themselves are instanced that's one thing, but if questing and hanging out is all in small isolated instanced areas then, I'm not going to invest in something which is only slightly better than what's already available for free in normal multiplayer games.   Also, I'm hesitant because showing off your style is essential to an MMO in my opinion and well, Bungie doesn't have much of a record recently with creating truly unique individuals.  We'll see eventually, that is if any of this rumor is true.

If Bungie's previous work - Marathon and obviously Halo- is any kind of measuring stick. Then we all know that they will have no problem developing a "A+" FPS experience.
We can only hope that they have learned enough with their last two games (Reach & ODST) to create a compelling narrative and fiction in which people will want to come back to for a long time.
