"At least now we know who will likely be making the next COD game. "Not Bungie. Activision desperately need big new franchises, which is what Bungie will give them. I imagine Treyarch and Zombinity Ward will continue to pump out the standard CoD games for a good while yet.

Bungie is a development studio owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment. They are the creators of the Marathon, Myth, Halo, and Destiny series of games.
Bungie and Activision Announce ExclusiveWorldwide Publishing Deal
" Dude, what? Does this mean Activision will be publishing Reach? Hopefully Activision will have no influence on Bungie, but if what MattyFTM said is true, I suspect Bungie will be fine. "MS owns the Halo franchise so this has nothing to do with Reach or any other Halo product.
" Does Bungie have issue with their sight?! Do they not see what is going on RIGHT now with Activision, Infinity Ward and Respawn Entertainment? I'll take a wait and see stance to this I guess... "Activision OWNS IW. This is just a partnership. Bungie still have total control of the studio and their IP's.
They are not going to be owned by Activision and they will still own all of the IPs. If Bungie doesn't like what Activision is doing down the road, they can afford to get out of the deal.
Seriously, is Microsoft just sitting on their hands? Bungie leaves Microsoft for more freedom, and then they sign a ten year publishing deal with Activision?
I am immediately reminded of Dr. Malcolm's warning at the start of Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World:
I have no idea what the hell they are thinking. Sure, Activision has the clout and marketing machine to make sure their next games do well, but it comes at the price of their souls. They left Microsoft because they wanted to have more freedom and after all that went down with Infinity Ward, they've lied down with lions and signed an exclusive deal with Activision for 10 years? If history is any sign, little by little Activision will consume Bungie and break them down just as Activision does to everyone. Even Blizzard is not above their tyranny and before this decade is over, Bungie will regret having made this deal."[Joining Activision] is the worst idea in long sad history of bad ideas."
" Does Bungie have issue with their sight?! Do they not see what is going on RIGHT now with Activision, Infinity Ward and Respawn Entertainment? "I don't think Bungie runs their company based on video game news blogs and internet rumors. I know this may be shocking, but Bungie's vision of the situation may actually be clearer than that of a rabid pack of uninformed, random internet users.
I could be wrong tho.
" Seriously, is Microsoft just sitting on their hands? Bungie leaves Microsoft for more freedom, and then they sign a ten year publishing deal with Activision? "Microsoft owned Bungie. Activision are just going to publish their games. So yes, this is going to give them a hell of a lot more freedom.
Why does this continue to seem like some horrible joke? Oh well, I guess I get to see them create and subsequently be forced to whore out their own IP instead of Halo, which will be whored out by Microsoft instead.
This really doesn't seem to getting through to people.Activision are just going to publish their games. So yes, this is going to give them a hell of a lot more freedom. "
" Seriously, is Microsoft just sitting on their hands? Bungie leaves Microsoft for more freedom, and then they sign a ten year publishing deal with Activision? "What ever game Bungie makes is still gonna be on the 360, so it's not like MS is doing anything wrong.
" Sucks to be Bungie. "Unless they are allergic to money, no, it doesn't suck to be Bungie.
It really does - tho if it was it would be way too obvious. :P" While I'm 100% sure this is all legit, It does seem a lot like a perfect late Liar's Day "joke" doesn't it? "
I'll ask a noob question. What exactly is a publisher's responsibility? Does Activision actually back Bungie's new games with cash? Can they dictate release dates or influence content in any way? I know that Activision is unpopular but it seems to me Activision's role is basically to press disks and distribute the games. Specially to multiple platforms. Clearly they can't touch Halo so other than getting a piece of the action on Bungie's next big thing, what is the problem? Just asking.
" New Halo every year now. "The fact that Bungie don't actually own the Halo IP makes me think not.
Good move by both of them.
- Activision need new A+ IP's, which Bungie can no doubt provide (and have been longing to produce), while Bungie get free reign to produce their stuff independently.
- Bungie probably had so many bids from various big publishers that they could negotiate the contract whichever way they want - don't think Activision are going to force them to do their bidding, Bungie probably only went with them because they offered the biggest chunk of money for the best contract terms.
From the wording of the press release this doesn't seem like they're co-publishing (as with EA Partners) - this is a real publishing deal. Bungie makes good stuff, Activision makes a box for it and takes a load of money.
I don't think they're going to have much to do with CoD/MW - Bungie have spent enough time being tied to a single franchise to know that they want to try something different. Sure, they might be roped in to advise some other studio on multiplayer, but Activision still have a chunk of Infinity Ward (anyone know how many of the multiplayer people are left?) - who have a track record for being some of the best multiplayer designers in the business.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the details are all in the contract." I'll ask a noob question. What exactly is a publisher's responsibility? Does Activision actually back Bungie's new games with cash? Can they dictate release dates or influence content in any way?
Since Bungie was rolling in there with a strong hand I would imagine that contract leaves them with a lot of freedom.
" I'll ask a noob question. What exactly is a publisher's responsibility? Does Activision actually back Bungie's new games with cash? Can they dictate release dates or influence content in any way?As I understand it, publishers have full control over demos, betas, review copies, copy protection, ports to other systems, release dates and PR. They can also "encourage" the developers to cut out stuff in order to sell it separately and/or force them to put out mediocre DLC after the release.
Well, practically everything besides programming the game itself.
" Bungie is officially screwed. "Hey I'm Activision, I like to take your games, publish them, and then fire you and keep all the money." "Activision does not own Bungie. People need to stop thinking this is like Activision buying IW.

If down the road Bungie doesn't like what Activision is doing, they have the manpower and resources to back out of the deal." @CitizenKane said:

The reaction's a bit ridiculous folks. Bungie are still completely free to do as they wish. Activision will just be putting their games in box. This sounds like it's a good deal on Bungie's part to me. They even retain IP.

" From the Beginning, You know the End "THAT is awesome indeed. ^^Applies so very well. Well done, my friend. ^^
" THE BEST PART OF WAKIN UP, IS BUNGIE DYING A HORRIBLE DEAAAAAAAAAAAAATHHHHHHHHHHHHH "lol
Oh Bungie what are you doing, money talks I guess.
Some reports have stated that this deal as been nine months in the making, so I do have to wonder what Bungie think of the whole Infinity Ward mess. To be honest I haven't had a whole lot of interest in Bungie games for many years now, but they seem like a good studio of talented folks and this sounds rather unlike them. But as I said, money talks.

Remember when EA was the big bad corporate?
And now look at R* taking the old EA route of poor work conditions, It's a cycle,
"Hey let's all hate on this guy!"
Soon somebody else will fuck something up and it will be fashionable to hate on them, We can't stem the tide of hate,
All we can do is just try and keep things civil eh?
Hard to say that I will now not buy anything from Bungie again, but this makes it really hard to support them. Sure they are a private company and I am sure that Activision offered them a great deal, but are they completely oblivious to the way Activision is viewed. Talk about signing a deal with the Devil.

FUCK THIS SHIT!
I woke up today playing a few rounds of SC2 and lost all of them, which dropped me down to 5th rank in the Gold League...at first I thought it was due to the morning jitters and me not up to par, but now I realized it's all Activision's fault due to this news!
Internally I knew that something bad was going to happen, and now Blizzard will be forced to make games with Bungie (who MAKES FUCKING HALO AND I FUCKING HATE HALO)...OMG, SC2 mixed with Halo.
I think I'm going to cancel my preorder for the Collecter's SC2.
