Warhammer 40K, y'all.
I'd like to see Battlefield take a new, earnest look at some of the other wars in modern history:
This gives them a few years of content. After that, let's go future space war.
Battlefield Prehistoric Era. Since people seemed so upset with COD going full star wars, let's give them what they really want.
Picture this E3 demo. Oog goes searching for triceratops eggs, but is immediately ambushed by a group of Uhg Ehrm bonemen (your traditional loadout, fishbone gun + primordial soup canisters, click the stick to melee with massive dino bone) but the sound of shrieking is heard overhead. Oog looks up to see pterodactyl aerial support from his fellow Durga-bogah Bonk Bonks. Zoom out to see this happening all over the map. Volcanoes are killstreaks.
Historical shooters are trite at this point, and while nobody seems to be into the new call of duty direction but you have to give them credit for branching out.
I want the new battlefield to make its own setting up, do something with an alternate history. Or just go all the way back to the medieval era and do a AAA Chivalry type game
Battlefield: 793 Lindisfarne
Ministers vs Viking raiders, sword on books action. Hot unlocks like sniper scopes for the spear men and of course wizard spell upgrades for the Ministers.
Going back to WW2 makes the most sense for the next game, as WW1 has been mined pretty well in just this initial release. Almost all available weaponry during that period is already in the game, with only a few omissions really that I'm sure will be in later DLC (many of the weapons of WW1 were shared among nations, so there wasn't too much variety between what any given nation used). There weren't many vehicles either, and what's in the game again already represents just about everything for the most part. I'm sure more will be in DLC in that regard. A lot of people are obviously clamoring for Bad Company 3, but given that for all intents and purposes its just a modern era game, which BF3 and 4 covered pretty extensively, there's not much they could do with it to innovate over those games I don't think.
Bad Comapany 3 is the dream but why not go further back and do the Civil War.
Then in the commercials they can play a remix of Guns N Roses "Civil War". What's so civil about war, anyway?
I'm a little late here but...
They've taken huge risks in the setting for the last 2 Battlefield games, in my opinion. Granted, BF1 is a lot like BF4 in practice, but setting something in WWI risked scaring off a ton of potential players, especially young ones whose power fantasy is more "machine guns and oscar mikes" at the expense of less-explored territory.
It will probably never happen, but I'd love for them to keep going back and take a stab at huge-scale medieval combat... like Chivalry or For Honor. I know that makes it not so much a shooter, but I'm totally down with that.
I've said it before. Epic WW2 setting. I want to storm Normandy Beach, scale the cliffs of Point Du Hoc, win the battle of Stalingrad and kill me some motherfucking nazis. That's all.
Or Korea. Or Vietnam. Or mid 90's stuff in central/Eastern Europe.
Would be nice to give it a break rather than burning everyone out on yearly installments. As is beginning to show with Call of Duty, folks are getting tired of shelling out for reskins and minor improvements yearly. I think Battlefield played it smart but I see their luck running out as well.
(Give us another 2142)
We have had modern day ad sci fi. Has anybody made a fantasy shooter?
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic? Lichdom: Battle Mage? Vermintide?
Those are the only things that come close that I can think of, without just listing first person RPGs...
I've been waiting a long time to get back to WW2, but I doubt they will immediately follow up with that. WWI was pretty damn big, wonder if they will just do expansions for a year or let Battlefront take centre stage next year.
Is there *always* a new BF every year?

On average, it's a couple years between "main" titles. Spinoffs are different, but I guess they might count towards fatigue. For reference - not including 1943, which isn't a full game:
I too also hope for another WW2 entry. The conflict was so vast and our ability to portray it has evolved so much that I feel another entry is definitely warranted, and DICE can pull it off.
At either rate, expect no news for like two years and a potential release sometime in 2019.
I don't really care as long as it's something different.
It would be nice if shooter franchises didn't get mired in very strict "eras" so much. I would love it if they could just jump around in time from game to game as much they wanted rather than like, "Here's five WWII games in a row, now here's ten modern games in a row, now here's a bunch of future shit."
