    I remember reading the manual back in the day, and it talked about how he was Grunty's former mentor or something.  Then she took all of his mumbo tokens and placed a curse on him, which gave him the skull mask.  The curse wouldn't go away until she was defeated.  Obviously, that idea was sort of... retconned in future games.

    Dude! Mine too. I just looked at some pictures of Mumbo and Jinjos, and dude is totally a Jingo. Totally the same body type, except Mumbo is bigger. Same hands, feet, toes, chest, and everything. Crazy! How did I never realize this?!

    Apparently Mumbo used to be a teacher, and he was the one who taught Grunty how to perform magic. She cursed him after she mastered magic, the only way to free himself is to take down Grunty.
