This Modern Warfare 2 PC Situation Is Getting Crazy

Apparently, you can pry these dedicated servers from a lot of people's cold, dead hands.

Too bad this guy isn't around anymore.
Too bad this guy isn't around anymore.
Look, I'm not even going to get involved in this debate about Infinity Ward's big changes to Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer infrastructure on the PC. If you haven't been keeping up, those are the ones that eliminate dedicated servers and custom game mods in favor of console-style matchmaking and tighter controls over the ways users interact with pretty much every element of the online experience. This new infrastructure will take the form of IWNet, a custom service that sounds a little like Blizzard's forthcoming revamp to Battle.net.

The official line is that this will vastly improve online play for the majority of players who don't want to scan server browsers and memorize IPs, and IW's Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling has provided a defensive breakdown of what these changes really mean to you, the player.

Of course the PC community has gotten accustomed to its flexibility over the years, and this isn't going over so well. From people cancelling their PC preorders to a petition with over 110,000 signatures as of this writing, PC players are in a furious uproar.

Not me. Considering I

  • Personally have played less and less PC multiplayer over the last few years
  • Intend to play MW2 on a console anyway, and
  • Have no idea what percentage of Infinity Ward's total audience the PC actually represents (probably a small one)

I'll refrain from rendering my own opinion about this. Instead, I'll use this post to convey to you exactly how dire this has gotten.

That's right. Bumper stickers. The "I Won't" one is pretty clever. Perhaps these are suitable for printing at your local print shop.

Really, I'm looking for the opinion of you, the Giant Bomb reader. If you were planning to play MW2 on the PC, does this really get under your skin all that much? Will it stop you from getting that version? Any version? Do these changes simply represent the way things are going for multiplayer design, or are they Activision's efforts to clamp down on the free-wheelin' nature of online PC play? Sound off!

This is fucking ridiculous

If you really care don't get the game.

If you are going to not play what is sure to be a fantastic game because the online is not set up perfectly for your needs then you are stupid.

I was seriously thinking of Upgrading my PC again and getting MW2 (played MW1 on PC and loved it) but after this I've decided to buy it on 360 around Christmas which is probably what IW and Activision want. Going to wait until HL2:E3 til I upgrade instead.

I was once a PC gamer, long ago, but I have been converted to a console, primarily 360, gamer. I like matchmaking and I don't think PC gamers should be able to do stupid shit like rank boosting servers. I do see the controversy in no deticated servers, but I mean really, is it that big of a deal?

In my opinion, not a fan of the doing away.
Since this is a PC issue, having primary console gamers comment on an issue that doesn't affect them in any way at all, seems unproductive. It's like having a Kalahari Bushman comment on the fact that all supplies of pure maple syrup is being replaced by Aunt Jemima Butter flavoured syrup.

Maybe. I think.

Like with L4D2, it's just a bit of a shock really. I mean, the thought of not having Dedicated Servers sounds a bit dire, but who knows? Maybe IWNET will work out just fine...we'll have to wait and see.

Spoken like a true console owner. I'm not trying to sound  condescending  or anything, but trust me, telling PC gamers to buy the console version is something you do not want to do
Might as well try playing with a NES controller. -_-

The PC version has sold a couple million judging by the number of people who play the game daily so I'd say close to or as big as the PS3's COD4 audience, but nowhere near the size of the 360's.

Take away modding, okay.......but dedicated servers? that's a big nono for me as a non-u.s. resident among many other things like community, player-base...etc. I like my freedom but you can have your socialised medicine (reagan version) if you want.

If I had been planning on getting the PC version this wouldn't bother me.  Part of the reason I am getting the 360 version is to avoid cheaters, have more balanced online play, and the leaderboard system.  All of those reasons are somewhat less of a problem on PC with this announcement, but I'm still gonna get the game on 360, despite my PC being more than enough to run the game very well.

Personally, I've been a gamer for a long time, both console and PC.  I have experienced the highs and lows of both console & PC online gaming.  To me the lack of dedicated servers seems like almost a complete non-issue.  I've never had any better of an experience with the PC gaming community online than console.  PC gamers invented tea bagging corpses for fucks sake.  They were the first to call people noobs because some people didn't play online shooters 24/7.  Joining a specific server?  I don't give a shit.

I think these changes represent the way things are going for MP for a variety of reasons.  It can be cheaper for companies and give them more control.  The shrinking PC games market.  Yes, Activision is one of a few companies really clamping down on the PC side now.  I think there is a market for easier to play PC games, and I think since that's positive for the business side, many game developers will focus on it.

I was already not buying the game due to the unnecessary price hike to the pc version, but this just confirms my decision was the right one. It's a shame really, Infinity ward always supported PC gaming up until this point. I am made sad :(

CoD on PC is huge, it's not a "small percentage". Where I live (sweden) CoD on PC is by far bigger then it is on consoles. (assuming you take the CoD2 community into account)

And yes, everybody's pissed about this and will stop me and several other people from buying the game.

They do care about the game, but they want, and are accustomed to dedicated servers. Matchmaking is what they had to to for consoles, and honestly, I find it can be a pain. I support these efforts, because they are trying to transition the online for PC into the online for consoles, something that they really have should not be doing. (Remember, in my opinion.)

I'm no PC Gamer, but whilst I empathise with a feature you've grown accustomed to beaing taken away. I feel more strongly that gamers, as a whole, need to grow up, and realise that companies are set up in order to make a profit. By simply shouting "You're a twat who knows nothing!" at 402, or anyone, will not get the respect or attention of the company, no matter what the issue.

If you feel passionately, write a reasoned out argument, rather than make a petition on half-formed ideas about a product that isn't out yet. At least try it first. This will get you closer to your "goal" more than anything else will.

I don't really see what the big deal is. I played MW1 on Xbox 360 and it worked fine so why does it matter if the PC version does the same thing? Can someone explain? I have no idea what the difference is because I hardly ever play online games on my PC. Actually I perfer to play games by myself or with 3 friends in the same room on any platform.

This is all about making money, and I figure the more money they make the better the games will be in the long run.  Also you have Activision as the publisher, who is all about making as much money as humanly possible.  If this wasn't done then they probably just wouldn't release it at all on the PC, and if they didn't then it probably wouldn't bug Activision all that much, since MW2 is pretty much a console game now.

As long as I can still easily get into rooms with my friends, which this seems like it'd only improve, then I'm happy.  I'm a PC Gamer and I have a 360, and have always liked matchmaking services, just because it gets me into games a little quicker.  On the other hand, I find when I'm playing World at War on the 360, it can sometimes be difficult to play on the map you want at any given time.  This is only a small grievance, since usually any map I'd be happy with, but I'm just recalling my days playing Battlefield 2 on the PC and loving the 24/7 Karkand servers.  Still though, not a big deal to me.  I'll be getting it on the 360 because all my friends will be getting it there.

Nothing? Ummm...no it is not nothing....you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. "
So this is a big freaking deal?
This will destroy the game in any way possible.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against gaming on the PC at all. It's feels more natural for me to play a FPS on a PC since that's what I'm used to.
But I don't see what the big problem is with this?
I've seen kids go apeshit over this and say that the game is gonna suck and not be as good as the previous MW game.
I don't get it, and I might not "know what I'm talking about" in your eyes, but who the fuck cares? Who are you anyway?
In my opinion this game is still gonna be great on either platform, and a little matchmaking doesn't destroy anything in the multiplayer part.

My opinion, not yours, get over it.
We can't all be the same, so no use crying about it to me.

PC peeps will use any excuse to pirate. CoD4:MW didn't have DRM and a couple months later 'fourzerotwo' wrote on his former blog...

They Wonder Why People Don't Make PC Games Any More
On another PC related note, we pulled some disturbing numbers this past week about the amount of PC players currently playing Multiplayer (which was fantastic). What wasn't fantastic was the percentage of those numbers who were playing on stolen copies of the game on stolen / cracked CD keys of pirated copies (and that was only people playing online).

Not sure if I can share the exact numbers or percentage of PC players with you, but I'll check and see; if I can I'll update with them. As the amount of people who pirate PC games is astounding. It blows me away at the amount of people willing to steal games (or anything) simply because it's not physical or it's on the safety of the internet to do.

http://www.actiontrip.com/rei/comments_news.phtml?id=011508_10

Probably fed up with supporting dedicated servers for pirates if their numbers are so high.

A better idea than you by leaps and bounds apparently.  Aimbots are everywhere on the PC version of COD4.  PC gamers can be on different spec hardware, or running on different settings.

The console versions of MP games are ALWAYS better in the above ways (well not if you're trying to play a legit Xbox 1 game, as that system is cracked).

Not buying the game anymore because I'm sick fo being treated this way as a PC gamer and I'm sick of this whole casual gamer thing dumbing down my experience. Also no dedicated servers means major lag for people in countires where IW doesn't host servers, it means the death of clans and it means the death of mods and custom maps. I mean look at Valve... where would they be without these things? nowhere.

If this is the way things are going then I'll be quitting gaming because I can't support this shit.

It is simple, Brad.

I was hyped for MW2 on the PC before this announcement. I played over 400 hours of COD4 multiplayer on the PC, and loved every minute.  After this announcement, I won't buy this game, and I am looking seriously looking at Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on the PC as my new FPS fix. And I never played a Battlefield game before. If I want to play the single player campaign (is it 6 hours?), I will simple rent it on the PS3 and be done with it.

I have played matchmaking online FPS on the PS3 and my friend's 360 several times. It is okay, but dedicated servers have superior ping times, allows stronger communities to form around them, allows far more customization and modding in multiplayer, and are more effective in banning those stupid racist blabbering morons you keep running into on consoles.

So to charge $60, instead of the usual $50, for an inferior multiplayer experience is absolutely unacceptable from the PC consumer perspective. No one asked for this change, and Robert Bowling also said about a month ago that the PC multiplayer would not be changed from COD4.

The MW PC crowd has every right to be furious at IW, and since IW wants to take all the credit on how MW2 is received, they deserve every bit of that fury.

One thing you got wrong: Many game let you save favorite servers so you don't have to memorize the IP, but that's not important.

And yes I'm not going to buy MW2 because of this.

Principles are swell and all, but I find it doubtful that all these 110,000+ people would stay abstinent.  It only takes one player in your usual team to break rank, then the next thing you know you're spammed with "don't be a douche, come play", while you weep into your warm mug of Mountain Dew and load up Counter Strike again to the sound of crickets. :)

I was going to buy MW2 for the PC.  Now I will not be buying any copy, PC or Xbox.  I especially don't like the bullshit they're feeding us that no dedicated servers is a "feature."  Call of Duty is now a console exclusive in my eyes.
