Telltale To Take On Jurassic Park And Back To The Future

Dude, yeah.

Hold on to your butts and your hoverboards. Telltale Games, the clever girls beneath the hood of a crop of licensed-based games, are tackling two new properties: Jurassic Park and Back to the Future. No, really.

In the July issue of Game Informer, it's revealed that Telltale has inked a deal with NBC Universal Studios to produce an episodic series based on the JP license. A recent AP report confirms that the studio is also planning to start working with Back to the Future series as well.

Talking to GI, Telltale CEO Dan Connors didn't have much to say about the Jurassic Park series, only mentioning it by name and giving the standard Telltale boilerplate answer about any new titles: "For Jurassic Park, we will leverage Telltale's expertise in storytelling and game design to deliver on the tension and drama of the series creating the ultimate cinematic adventure."

BRO, THIS ISN'T ALAN WAKE
BRO, THIS ISN'T ALAN WAKE
In the official announcement materials, Bill Kispert, interactive vice president at Universal Studios, seems to suggest that these games won't be shoot-'em-ups. Whew. "Jurassic Park and Back to the Future are two of our broadest and most beloved properties," Kispert said in a statement. "We were very interested in bringing them into the interactive space, but they're not exactly the kind of properties that lend themselves to the stereotypical shoot-'em-up style of gameplay."

Electronic Game Informer points out that JP series is slated to launch this year, though the amount of episodes that will be produced is unknown. According to the AP report (and our own materials), both IPs are slated for release on the usual Telltale platforms--the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii and Macintosh--this winter...when everything else under the sun releases, too.

I'm guessing we'll learn a bit more about both games at E3, so until then I'll just keep dreaming the dream of playing a Malcolm-centric, point-and-click adventure game. I've no interest in this Back to the Future business, mainly because it doesn't have a quirky chaostician. If the dog is confirmed, though, count me in. I love dogs.

Surprisingly enough, there has been a dearth of good dinosaur games, the last one I can remember being the King Kong one. So hurrah for trying.

I think its that Malcolm is holding a light source in his hand while seemingly trying to fend off a giant ass T-Rex.  Yeah, that's not gonna work, hence the joke.

I think the best way to do JP would be this way.  It should make it more story driven and interesting.  Just hope there are no dinosaurs with guns attached to their heads.  Think a FPS would work too, if they made it like the first Half-Life, lone guy solving puzzles, occasionally shooting some assholes, in this case dinos, and trying to just escape and accomplish a little something on the side.

I'm not sure how they'll go about creating good games based on either of these properties but it'll be cool to see what the guys at Telltale can do.

if you don't like JP or BttF that's fine, but your post focuses primarily on making GB look bad, what's up with that?  I hear signing up at gamespot is free..

I'm glad to see the telltale guys stepping outside of their comfort zone. I love Sam & Max, Monkey island and all the other stuff they've done, but it's nice to see them trying something different for a change. There are some talented dudes at Telltale, so they should be able to pull this off.

I really wanna watch Back To The Future again. And man, Jurassic Park, I remember the arcade cabinet. I was scared of that game.

My thoughts exactly. Now we'll see what Telltale is really capable of. I respect the work they've done so far but its not the type of games I enjoy. Now If they pull out something more adult with the JP IP, i'd be really interested.

You don't like BttF Brad? One of the best trilogies ever! There is a lot of potential in a Back to the Future Adventure game I think. Especially from Telltale.

Nice Allan Wake reference.

That being said, this is late. Someone already posted on the forums about this. I'll say again. Its weird, as these IPs are old, but its tell tale so I'll give em a shot. I buy everything Tell Tale makes since they read my review on Sam and Max hit the road and let me know they were making Sam and Max games all those years ago (2006 to be exact).

I was initially a little bummed out that Telltale wasn't going more toward new, original intellectual properties now that they've gained a solid reputation in the industry (it's currently just Puzzle Agent, I guess?), but then I remembered that I love both Jurassic Park and Back to the Future, that this will be the first time either license will have a massive dose of rock-solid quality in the interactive space, and that this is going to end up in Mad Bank for the Telltale folks.  I am all for this.

That could be pretty cool, I could see Back to the Future fitting into their point and click narrative style but I'll be really interested to see how Jurassic Park is going to work. I don't believe you can die in any Telltale adventure games, beyond maybe an easter egg somewhere. So can you die in Jurassic Park or is there going to be a situation where the T-Rex almost bites you but doesn't and that loops till you figure out the puzzle.

Stoked for the Jurassic Park one.  It'll be nice to (hopefully) get something good out of that license for the first time since the first movie (and my rose tinted memories of the snes/genesis games).  Well, okay, I kinda liked the 3rd movie too.

I would like to point out that Jurassic Park, which heavily features unusually aggressive predatory animals who want to kill you dead, absolutely lends itself to a "stereotypical shoot-em-up", assuming that he ignorantly refers to modern FPSes and not the outdated overhead plane dealies.

I'll concede the point for Back to the Future, though, you can't really make a gung-ho action game out of whimsical comedy-action.

@Deusoma: Not if the property is actually used right. Nothing about Jurassic Park involves shooting up Dinosaurs. Making a game that just involved some gung-ho action hero running around killing all the dinosaurs you see goes against practically everything those movies were about, and is just a lame cop-out for people who can't come up with anything worthwhile.

It's hard to say if what they're going to do will turn out better, but a FPS is definitely not the proper way to make a game out of the franchise.
