Shadow Of The Colossus: The Movie?

Don't get your hopes up. The writer of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is writing the script.

Shadow of the Colossus would be a great name for a Andre the Giant documentary.
Shadow of the Colossus would be a great name for a Andre the Giant documentary.
The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business Blog is running a story that Shadow of the Colossus is in the first steps of heading to the big screen. It appears the film adaptation is being done by Sony Pictures which is kind of cool considering it's a Sony game to begin with. Early details are that Kevin Misher is set to produce with Justin Marks penning the script. Marks is supposedly also working on a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea adaptation for director McG, but gamers would likely recognize him more for his latest opus Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li. Misher has some equally mediocre pedigree with The Rock classics The Scorpian King and The Rundown under his belt. Essentially, my early excitement after reading the headline immediately dissipated into flashbacks of every TANG episode Ryan has done.

Still, I definitely think Shadow of the Colossus would make a great flick if done right. Ryan would laugh at me, but I think it could work as an art-house indie flick that had no dialogue and was more of a silent film then anything else. There's a lot of room to play with a cool visual style from the game and it would be an interesting project.

Then again it looks like a later Variety story (the author admits to being friends with several of the key players) on the movie leads me to believe art-house is exactly the opposite of what the producers are looking for. Here's a quote from that story:
I understand the folks working on the project are planning to have some of the characters who appear only momentarily in the game, such as those who try to track down and stop Wander, play bigger roles in the film. And despite the game's somewhat "artsy" cred, they're hoping "Shadow" will be a "Lord of the Rings"-style fantasy tentpole.
Eek. Lord of the Rings? Consider me instantly skeptical.

This type of movie needs to be handled by somebody with a good sense of art. Not somebody who gets their art from drawing on the back of a cereal box...

Bad Snide.  No cookie!  lol

Don't worry, though.  You had more info, and it has apparently made BoG question the meaning of life now.

If he does decide to drop himself into a vat of deep fry, I could help rule the forums with an iron fist!!!  lol

There's no way this movie could have the same emotional impact as the game. Completely unnecessary.

It's ok, except that you gathered some more information on the subject, which only made the whole thing worse. It's about time for one of those internet petitions.

You know, if this movie gets made...and it's absolutely wretched, then man...it's going to make the game look THAT MUCH BETTER!!!

So this could be a GOOD thing.  People who didn't pay attention the first time around will be able to go "dood, this game probably sucks, let's rent it"...and then they'll go "ZOMFG, THIS GAME IS FUCKING INSANE!!!!111!!!".

I would love a Shadow of Clossus movie if, and only if it was done right.

Making SoC into a movie would be a delicate subject at best, considering the scenario during the course of the game. This is also not even considering the thought that would have to go into the art style and nature of how it would all be presented.

I also really hope they don't try to do anything LotR-esque. That would be a pretty fast step in the wrong direction.

Are they stupid?! How can they screw up such a cinematic game with changing the whole tone? Now, I don't want to get ahead of myself because we don't have any footage yet, but it seems so ridiculous to do this. It's like they just wanted to make a LotR type movie and decided to slap on the Shadow license. If they got a good director to do this  (like G. del Toro or any other decent director) it maight be amazing. This is so stupid and I'm angry, and tired, and now I'm going to go to bed.

With the above quote, I know this film is going to fail and it's a very sad thing because SotC could have been an amazingly powerful film.

I read about this earlier on joblo.com

Yeah this won't turn out to be good.
The writer is a fucking joke.
And what the hell would he have to write? A whole script full of descriptions and thats it!
There was little to no dialogue in this game lol.
Also, I remember the game being very emotional, not because of the story though. The story was the game, so-to-speak. Thats the thing that these people trying to make it don't understand. It was highly emotional because it was you making all of those adventurous, and sad things happen. It was you who was journeying through vast beautiful landscapes and slaughtering incredibly massive and rare creatures into extinction. Watching that happen in a movie will just look fucked up and boring.
But yeah, this writers resume has some seriously shitty fucking movies on it.

A Shadow of the Colossus movie could be good if it focused more on the prequel story to the game.  I'd love to see some of the moments that made Wander love Mono so much that he'd do what he does in the game, and how the relationship between Wander and Agro was built.

Instead it sounds like they're going the special-effects-and-a-lot-of-action-is-what-this-movie-is-all-about route. Because, you know, that's all video games are: a flimsy story to glue all the cools parts together. So that's all the movie needs to be (that's why Transformers is so cool).

Wait a second here- Wasn't that game's story engaging more because of how it was told than the actual content?  You can't just take all the cutscenes from the game, film them, and then call it a day.  When a story is that minimalist, I don't think you could even make a decent movie without changing everything around.  You would probably just be better off making something new than trying to adapt this.

Sorta like how nobody made a Watchmen movie for so long because the story was great because it played to the strengths of the medium.  Moving it to something else would be missing the point of what the original game was about.  A game with a good story doesn't mean it would make a good movie.

The problem is that even if the film can emulate much of the game's look and feel, I don't understand the motivation for making it - rather, I don't see any legitimate motivation, putting aside financial goals. What can a movie about the game bring out that the game failed to? The experience originally created is, or at least seems to me, complete already. Certain elements of it will have to be lost, such as the individual's engagement with the effort of slaying the colossi, and, again, I just don't see what they can supplement that with. I think the story's out, since the subtleties of the player interaction and general lack of backstory are integral to its aim.
Are they really just going to show a dozen action movie boss fights? I mean sure, there's a place for that in movies, I just don't think it should be this one.

Is nothing sacred?

EDIT: Yeah, The Rundown was fairly enjoyable. Admittedly, mostly for the actiony stuff, but it was at least a passably-written film. But... are you telling me the same guy was behind the Scorpion King, though? Does. Not. Compute.

Chris Kline IS the Shadow, Kristen Kruek IS the Collossus!
Also: I liked the Rundown! I thought it was a lot better than it got credit for. Still not the man I want writing THIS, but not a bad movie.

Not much else to say about this that most people haven't already said, the film will be completely different from the game because the game has virtually no story compelling enough to make a quality film, leaving a mediocre writer plenty of room to add whatever he wants. I do think it could be done, but it would be best served as a short Japanese film(technically Wander and the Colossus), maybe an hour at most... It would really all be in the direction and cinematography where the meat of the film would be. I could imagine it, visually, being more like 300 mixed with a little bit of The Two Towers. But there again, going back to my first sentence, the film in my vision would be so close to the game there wouldn't be a point in making it. Games are meant to be played, not watched.

They should draft a law that forbids him to make this movie--or any other movie, for that matter.

That said: if this movie would be made it shouldn't be an art house movie. This movie would need a huge budget to render the colossi believable. However, it should also be without dialogue and there should only be three actors (the girl, the boy and the horse). Oh, and of course the creepy deity. The world should be very vast and empty.

The millions and millions of dollars it'll take to budget this movie would be better spent funding a PS3 sequel.

Oh please just leave it alone. It's fine how it is, why do you have to go and make a film about it?

My only fear is that people who have never played the game will go and see the movie, think it's completely crap and then never experience the game. That's only if the film is rubbish which, given the writers track record, is probably a good bet.
