Please Don't Run BioShock Into The Ground

2K's prez says the waterlogged action hit may warrant up to five sequels. But do we really want or need that many?

Not exactly the happiest place on Earth.
Not exactly the happiest place on Earth.
How many BioShock games do you think you'll want to play? Did you answer "six?" Then 2K Games has an exciting prospect for you!

OK, that's being way too harsh. Backing up a bit, I'm referring to an interview 2K global president Christoph Hartmann gave to MCV. Here's the relevant bit, where he's talking about the franchise's potential for sequels beyond the first upcoming one, Sea of Dreams.

For BioShock, because it’s so story driven, the question obviously arises: how long can you do it without turning into The Matrix? The first Matrix was great, the second one was weird and the third one, you thought: ‘Who [making this] is on crack and who isn’t?’. But, then again, look at Star Wars. It’s a fight between good and evil, just like BioShock. If we spin it the right way and get the right twist of innovation, we can make six parts of it, as Star Wars did.

But we have to be careful not to cash in.

Yes, yes you do. The only way I'd really feel comfy with so many BioShock games is with a smartly plotted story arc that actually supports such a lengthy series. But since Ken Levine is off doing his own thing and a largely new team is now working on the franchise, we can't know if that kind of tightly paced storytelling will be in place going forward. (Though, I'm generally optimistic about this first sequel, to be fair.)

There's a fine line between milking your cash cow and beating it to death. Luckily, 2K seems to grasp that particular wisdom. For the sake of BioShock's legacy, let's hope they don't choose to ignore it.

something about the gameplay in Bioshock that is unplayable for me. I bought the game at walmart yesterday, took it home, and play it for 2 hours and immediately return it back to walmart. For some strange reason, this game doesn't trigger my fancy unlike many other people who have played the game. Im sure this game is good and all, but....yeah, im one of the few who just can't play these kind of games.

Well there can be plenty of different stories to be told in rapture but I suppose the setting will get old extremely fast.

As long as they don't do it for the sake of milking a cash cow and continue the with the great story telling, then I have nothing against six games.

Holy balls, that's a lot of sequels.  I'm hoping they don't shorten the length of the already-planned sequels just to give us episodic-feeling games with cliffhanger endings.  That'd piss me off more than a donkey crapping in my burrito.

they're gonna make 3, at the most. and i predict that 2 and 3 will be nowhere near as cool as 1 was. then they're going to realize how retarded they are... and jump off a bridge.

i called it.

As long as they take their time with each one and don't try to knock one out every year, I see no problem with them showing that they have interest in the series for a prolonged period of time.

2 doesn't even have a release date so no time to panic just yet.  However as we've seen w/ Silent Hill, once you hand it off tom some random dev house, the franchise becomes a shell of itself

FIVE SEQUELS!?!?!?  Holy shit, I'm still not convinced Bioshock needs ONE sequel. The first one was good, it tied things up nicely, now they're using it as the engine to put another sequel train on the gaming tracks?

It had better do something totally revolutionary in Bioshock 2, otherwise I doubt we'll see 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7

Perhaps they should think more of the -shock suffix as the franchise, and use some of the broader concepts and mechanics as a framework for varying ideas in individual games.

Or maybe they should learn to crap ten brand new ideas out every time they go to the toilet or something.

Trying to create a 6 game story arc in the world of Bioshock would probably end up being kind of contrived considering the events of the first game.

It's a fair comparison.  Star Wars had 6 episodes and only 2 of them were good (ANH, ESB)  Bioshock has 1 great game, possibly the 2nd will also be great.  And just like  Star Wars, the next 4 will probably suck donkey nutz

Whoa... think about it. All the plasmid powers... they may actually be THE FORCE! Rapture is an underwater city, like the Gungan city where Jar Jar Binks comes from... a cameo must be in the works! I'm struggling to think of a good Big Daddy / Little Sister comparison to the world of Star Wars, but I'm sure there's one out there I'm just overlooking it.

The first one was in development for a long time, as I remember, they better take care. That shine could diminish, without the polish.

I loved Bioshock and would love to see more games set in that "World" but 5 more seams a little over the top for a game like Bioshock, I guess if the spread the release dates out by at least 2 years a game it could be alright

Well if we're running with the Star Wars analogy, which is kinda a load of bull, Empire STrikes Back is my favourite star wars film, so maybe there is hope!

But aside from that long, long shot, i wish they just kept it as 1 game.

Still skeptical about the sequel. Gosh darn, I don't think Bioshock would make much sense with sequels, but I just hope it's at least on par with the first game.

*sigh* Its this kind of stuff that really make me dislike sequels for the most part.

Some sequels can be good but when companies start talking about sequels to the not yet released sequels.. there becomes a major problem.

I can imagine like a prequel, you know like being a resident of Rapture as it is going down, or being one of the scientists that helped create the guy you were in the first one. But I'm afraid if they make 6 it could turn out like Prince of Persia.

I don't even want a Bioshock 2, let alone because its not even being made by the same people, but wow...I don't want it to turn into a fucking sports franchise and come out nearly once a year, or have 5+ sequels that are mediocre.

Wow, standing where we are now it's hard to imagine a situation where we're many years down the road, staring at our TV screens and PC monitors play a fifth Bioshock sequel. This can be done right but it seems like a huge task making 5 more Bioshocks, all at least half as good as the original. Although Star Wars was a good analogy of a series that managed to actually do something like this, it is an extremely exceptional series of films. I don't need to tell anyone here that we've seen many times before a series of films or games that were brilliant mercilessly pile-driven in to the ground for every last penny. Although you should never judge a game before it comes out and there is the possibility that Bioshock 2-6 could all be awesome titles I'm still a little worried that Hartmann is already thinking about number 6 when we only have a number 1. Still, as always it's always hard predicting the future properly and only time will truly tell if Bioshock stands the test of ages.

Only in a very genreal way. He didn't say Bioshock is as good as, he just said if the cards are played right, Bioshock could become a successful saga just like Star Wars. I think he is spot on, and judging by what he said it snot like there is a plan to go to five, just that if it can be done it will be. Personally I would like to see what else these guys can do, so at least I hope for abig change if they do go for the big 6.
