New Tony Hawk, Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, and More Announced at In-Game Ad Conference

Massive Inc. shows off Activision's 2009 games to potential advertisers and essentially announces a bunch of new stuff along the way.

The face of rock.
The face of rock.
MTV's got a lot of high-powered details on Activision Blizzard's 2009 lineup. The info comes out of a showcase put on by Massive Inc., Microsoft's in-game ad firm. The show is, essentially, games being presented to potential advertisers. Guitar Hero 5, a new Tony Hawk game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and a new racing-focused James Bond game from Bizarre Creations were all mentioned.

Here's the awesome kicker from MTV's Patrick Klepek:

At the meeting, Activision Blizzard showcased new games that would make sense for in-game ads, including the vaguely titled “Guitar Hero 5,” which included a screen shot of gameplay with a Burger King ad to the right of the note highway.

Yeesh. This is, clearly, the right way to debut a new sequel. With a fat ad next to it. You'd think that Activision would release some sort of information to the press at the same time, if only to potentially avoid having product placement be the first thing people hear about your next big sequel.

The quote out of the event on the new Tony Hawk game is "you’re not going to be playing this game with a controller in your hands." This lends credence to all the skateboard peripheral rumors that have come up over the last few months. The developer of the new Tony Hawk wasn't mentioned, but I heard awhile back that it was being done by a company called Robomodo, which is a Chicago-based studio filled with ex-EA Chicago and ex-Midway people. Robomodo has since announced that it is working on a popular Activision franchise, but hasn't said which one. This tenth Tony Hawk game will be out in October on 360, PS3, Wii, and DS.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 shouldn't be too big of a surprise, but it certainly dials down all the sci-fi and Civil War rumors that have been surrounding Infinity Ward. That was given a fall release date.

The Bond-based driving game will be done by Bizarre Creations, which Activision picked up relatively recently. It'll be out in September and won't be tied to a movie. Does anyone remember how much mess Activision talked about the Bond games that EA made when it first picked up the license? So far we've had one lackluster first-person shooter and now they're taking a second crack at 007 Racing? Weird.

Be sure to check out MTV's story for more details.

People are going to get fucking hurt with this skateboard peripheral.

Also, didn't you call the separation, Jeff, a few months back, between the Call of Duty and Modern Warfare franchises?  A brilliant man, this Gerstmann is.

Nothing particularly surprising there. The new bond racing game wasn't something I was expecting, but it doesn't seem weird on that list either.

They go from COD4 to CODMW2? That's confusing and it better be a work in progress title.

CoD: MW 2 next fall? Hmm, I hope they have been working on it since the first game, that would be dissapointing otherwise.

call of duty MW 2 - in a sci fi universe would totally suck....all the grittyness of CoD4 would be lost and  a civil war game.....that would suck even more - a game where it takes 4 minutes to reload lol??

That's really pretty fucking bad that they felt that GH5 needed to have ads in the announcement screenshot.  They hire people to look at those things so this can't have just been an "oh shit there's an ad in the background" thing.  I've accepted that GH is going to have ads in every iteration now so the news doesn't suprise me but surely they could at least give us some details before they start shoving the advertising in our faces.  Weird

I'm actually kinda hoping that the next CoD game will be slightly futuristic.  Maybe borrow some of the guns that Ghost Recon uses.  Still another Infinity Ward quality game will be awesome after World At War

Am I the only one who isn't bothered by ads? Honestly, I think being able to play as the King would be kinda funny.

Well, I was totally looking forward to the news on the upcoming Tony Hawk. Now that I've read it doesn't use a controller and it might not even be made by Neversoft, I'm just going to lower my head in shame and cry a little.

I can't see any reason to support ads, until advertisers can truly show me what value it brings to games. As of now,  I view them as annoyances, much like commercials and those things that run across the front of  some web pages, begging you to click on them.

Are we getting discounted or free content? Are game prices going down?

To SDAUZ:
Just because it would be a civil war game doesn't mean it will be set hundreds of years in the past where Muskets were used as guns.
Civil War means a war occurring between people from the same country. Such as the ciivil war in Baghdad today. So in theory it could be a game between say Scotland and England for example. Or even Democrats v Republicans in the states.

COD:MW2 is what I'm excited for. It seems Infinity Ward is really desperate to shake off Treyarch in that 2 Modern Warfare games would work but another WW2 shooter after 2 modern day sequals just wouldn't look good.

Hell yes, bring on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Though the name is going to take some time to get used to. I've never referred COD4 to its subtitle modern warfare.

A skateboard peripheral will be the worst thing to happen to the Tony Hawk games. It would be like replacing the pad in Tekken with a punchbag and expecting the player to hit it for a more immersive experience.

guitar hero NO, rock band is the way to go i mean look they even put ads in the announcement tht game sucks and is just completely copying rock band anyway but its still not as good...LOSERS

COD:MW2 yes finaly a real sequel to COD4 instead of a lame WW2 mod (Treyarch SUCKS)
Tony Hawk...psh never liked skating games and this wont make me
and i think that the bond racing game sounds like it could be mildly entertaining or a complete disaster, we'll see

Looks like Activision really is becoming the new EA. And by "New EA", I mean the evil EA from a few years ago that bought up all kinds of licenses and relentlessly whored them out until everyone was sick of them, in this case Guitar Hero (especially) and James Bond. Gross.

I'm glad they dropped the 4 out of Call of Duty.  It'd confuse people if the game was called Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2.  The idea of not holding a controller for Tony Hawk sounds stupid.

Completely agree - I mean, just look at Aliens.  Or Road Warrior.

You know what?  A Road Warrior game would be jokes.  So jokes.

I think PlasmaBeam44 meant CODMW2 or Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.
