Modern Warfare 2 Video Suggests A Subscription Model Is Coming

Whether or not the video can be trusted is another issue entirely.

In previous interviews, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has indicated he's big on the idea of a subscription model for Call of Duty, the premier multiplayer shooter on Xbox Live. But is it possible something along these lines is already in the works for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2? A new video suggests as much.

A user on 360Junkies has recorded a tale and a video that demonstrates something could possibly be afoot on Xbox Live Marketplace with the multiplayer portion of Infinity Ward's lauded and ever-popular shooter. According to this user, "PwnShop," while browsing to jump into a friend's room the other day, he was greeted with a menu asking for some sort of membership fee.

UPDATE: This video is a fake. More below.

Call of Duty is so widely played, it's subjected to a larger variety of unusual abuses than most games. This also means that an even wider audience of talented tricksters is in the game's user pool. So, to be fair, this could be nothing more than a clever fake created to stimulate massive response from the game's dedicated and large fan base.

The question as to why Activision would bother slapping a membership fee on a rather old game as opposed to, say, Treyarch's forthcoming offering is certainly a valid one. I've contacted an Activision representative about this video's integrity and will update when I get a response.

UPDATE: Activision still hasn't responded to my inquiry, but no worries--Infinity Ward's community manager Robert Bowling has squashed this rumor via Twitter. "Modern Warfare 2 subscription plan rumors going around," he said three hours ago. "For the record, nobody has to pay to play COD or MW2 multiplayer, nor will they." Josh Olin, Treyarch's community manager, has also chimed in. "No, you will not have to pay to play [Call of Duty: Black Ops] multiplayer either," he said.

Both Robert Bowling and the Treyarch community guy said on Twitter that you'd never have to pay to play Call of Duty, other than buying the game that is.

But, in the end, that would be Activision's call, wouldn't it? Terrifying!

Poor Infinity Ward, with half their team missing there's no way they can be working on a new game,  those saps who stayed behind hoping to get their loyalty fees are going to end up working on DLC for the rest of their career.

Glad that most of the MW2 I play now is at a friends house on a PS3 with t-rex sized tv in offline MP. Silly activision idea, guess if they put that idea out when the game came out along with hosing the dedicated servers it would have tanked the whole thing.

I doubt they would do this with MW2, or even Black Ops.  After that though, I could see them doing something like that.

They would never start charging for a game that's already out and has been free since release.
I don't doubt they have something cooking for Black Ops, though.

Memberships over xbox live would be a good test model to finally roll out MMO's on consoles.

I don't see how this isn't the death of COD, MW, whatever game tries to charge it. Why would anyone pay when there are so many other games like it out there for free?

No biggie, I don't play MW2 anymore anyway and the market is so over-saturated with COD type shooters that it's no problem for me to get my fix elsewhere.

I would have thought others would feel the same way but then again there was a bunch who paid those extortionate prices for the map packs...

Ouch, old not-news before it was even posted.
Also that UI is totally broken.  Nothing official would span both columns like that in the dash.  Maybe it might be an old piece of "hot coffee" code hook, but whatever.  Activision would give months of warning to their investors about a new revenue stream that big.

i could see them doing something along the lines that instead of paying for gold to play all games online you pay them something less than what gold is to just play call of duty online  basically all the people who already have gold would not be affected they could continue to play online but all the users who find that all they play online is call of duty this would be a cheaper alternative. does any of that make sense?  of course this would be bad for ps3 owners of something like that happened.

Yea this has about less than a 1% chance of being legitimate. Absolutely no basis for these claims and is liable to get Giant Bomb in trouble again for false accusations.

Exactly. It also gives other developers an advantage seeing as they'll be able to say "our game is free to play online".

With Giantbomb getting bigger, we need some sort of authentication check on these articles/stories. GBs already caused a fuss with the smaller 120 GB (I think) new 360 drive story.

That is indeed very interesting news. It remains to be seen if some official will answer the question about the authenticity of the video since there seem to be solid reasons against and for it being real.
What happens with MW2 doesn't bother me much personally, but non-MMO subscriptions absolutely seem a major topic right now since that could become very bothersome ...

Idk...if it is legit its probably just  for some sort of exclusive membership that offers like all the guns without ranking up or something. But it is probably fake and I do think the team should do a little more digging before posting things.

MW2 breaks the xbox dashboard in strange ways. Why would GB do an article on this?

No but seriously shit is fucked up. Download the Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug XX, GAROW MAU or Sam Sho II trials, launch MW2, start a private match and let it load up, from the dashboard menu quick launch one of the trials.

This allows you to get achievements from the trials.. WTF. I'm telling you its busted and bad things happen, but you didn't hear this from me.

What is this Kotaku?

The publisher of Call of Duty may want to explore "new digital business models" for its bestselling military shooter—perhaps as an MMO—but rumors of Modern Warfare 2 going pay-to-play appear to be premature.

Nothing to see here, folks. It's a fake.

First thought that comes to mind is this is a Call of Duty membership, so it would apply to all Call of Duty games?  I get the feeling they may try to pull a playstation plus thing where you can still play the game but will charge for enhancements.  You have to pay to Prestige, or to get certain kill streaks or play certain game modes or certain maps.  Only bad things can come of this.

Here is the thing.... you have to look at the wording. They said "no additional fees" would be required to play online. They never said  "NO"  fees.

My guess?  They are going to have a subscription model for rolling out new DLC and map packs.  You don't want the maps? Don't have to subscribe.  Want extra maps?   Pay us "X" amount of dollars per month.

Rumor has already been denied by IW and Treyarch. Brad needs to do his homework.
